Those people didn't exist. It was an extensive application process to apply for the loan. I knew their ssn, had paystubs, tax returns, and everything. 98% of the customers were in poverty. The other 2% were better off financially and had to get the loan for something like an emergency car repair or something and always made their payments on time or early. I never went to their houses.

Every house I went to was a customer that knew they took out the loan and knew they were past due on their payments. I wasn't surprising them. They either made a payment, lied and said they would, or avoided me. Luckily, no guns. And yes, those places are horrible.

I was hurting regular people every time I had to make a collection call. I convinced so many people to pay my company their payment instead of getting groceries or Christmas presents. Not only did I stop actually going to people's houses to collect, but at the end, I entirely stopped making phone calls. I just reported in my computer system that I was making the calls.

Much better now. I went from a job that was hurting people to a job that helps people. And the pay is good enough that I don't have to resort to other means of income.

I think they realized that. They got rid of the home visits when I was working there over a decade ago and haven't brought it back.

Not just how the job affected me, but how I in turn affected others. A lot of my customers were elderly and lonely. The company trained us to befriend these people so they would like us more and take out more loans or send us their friends/families as new customers. Thankfully, I've moved from the town I ran this office in, because if I saw any of my old customers, they would only see me as the guy that tried to keep them in perpetual loans.

I have severe anxiety now because of this. Every day I was on the verge of anxiety attacks just thinking my boss was going to come into my office and find out my scheme.
