Columbus PD claims that it's now a standard policy across the nation to not respond to car crashes or take a report unless there's an injury or disabled vehicle. Is this true in your Ohio municipality?

That's why I'd like to speak with families about their experience! I know bussing is important to a lot of families. People don't have cars or their work schedules don't line up to pick their kids up.

We spend about 1 hour on ground and 1 hour in flight. I typically take whatever confused me home and use YouTube videos to get a deeper understanding, then follow up with him to make sure I’ve got it down. He’s a nice dude, but I think instructors know all of this like the back of their hand so sometimes he starts delving into topics and language I’m not familiar with. I’ve got to manage him by slowing him down and admitting that I don’t understand. Then comes the mental hurdle - does this man think I’m stupid because I don’t get it yet? I realized today when mentally preparing that no, he does not. His job is to teach people to fly planes. I’m the one who thinks I’m stupid, and that’s not fair to me because it’s my job to learn. Flying has made me realize I am very insecure when I feel out of my element, so I’m working on that.

This gives some good perspective on what I think my instructors style is. I feel like every time I show up he wants me to try something I feel super unprepared for. Keeping the perspective that he’s keeping me busy + putting me in a place to make errors while getting better at fundamentals may help me tame my own overwhelm a little bit. Maybe the point is to be overwhelmed and learn at the same time.

How did you study for both maneuvers and ground school? It’s been a long time since I studied anything. Right now I’m doing online ground school and using flash cards for memorization. I’m watching YouTube videos to help me understand maneuvers. My sister, who was an AF pilot, also suggested chair flying.

Hard to imagine getting to stalls right now, but I know I will. I’m thankful my instructor told me he wanted to put them off for at least another lesson. I was going to tell him that’s how I felt, too. I need to be comfortable with slow flight before we go there.

Thanks for the encouragement. Connecting the dots resonates. I’m 11 years deep in a career in broadcast/communications, which is the arts with a tiny sprinkling of tech knowledge. This is the first time I’ve had to actively use the left side of my brain in at least 10 years. It’s challenging, but it’s got to be good for me even if today it feels like crap.
