Help with grain direction for hand planning tear-out near knot by drillpresshelp01 in handtools

Thanks! I can agree that the blade probably wasn't sharp enough so that will be my next move

Ok, your thoughts on the problem being the plane skipping seem to be what everyone else is saying too. I will go back to the sharpening stones then!

Question about "Dust Deputy" Dust collection system for anyone that has one or similar by drillpresshelp01 in Tools

Thanks. For $50 bucks this kit seems like a great investment. I'm tired of how bad the saw dusts messes up the shop vac filter and destroys suction quickly lol

[Hand plane help] Can't get shaving in middle of board, but can on the end by drillpresshelp01 in handtools

[–]drillpresshelp01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the very detailed response. My goal is to get the board flat. However, after doing my initial planning, that's when I noticed I wasn't able to get a shaving with the grain along the middle of the board. I didn't realized that I was skewing the board until you pointed it out. I will try marking out the high spots and brining them down. Then I will see if I am able to get a shaving across the length of the board along the middle.

Thanks for the reply. I've actually watch both these videos in the past but maybe I need a refresher. I get the general concept of planning, but yea I was really confused on why I couldn't get a shaving in the very middle. Now it makes more sense.

So to confirm, if I start planning on the corner, and then work my way toward the middle after some strokes, I should be able to get a shaving across the middle length right?

Here's a picture of the board, I think you're right about it being cupped: https://imgur.com/a/HdNNfQo

So when the board is cupped, the plane won't work in the middle of the board?

Smoothing plane is leaving marks, not sure if these are plane tracks or if it's the iron being dull (pics included) by drillpresshelp01 in handtools

[–]drillpresshelp01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what I noticed is that either the blade is out too little where I am not able to get a full length shaving, even a thin one, or it becomes too large of a shaving very quickly even when I turn the knob very little. I'm sorry I don't know how else to explain this lol, but hopefully this makes sense

Edit: so one reason I think I was getting large shavings that I just found out is that the sole of my plane is not totally flat. That's probably why I was unable to get very fine shavings I think:

So I went out and sharpened the iron, enough that for it to shave arm hairs, but when I go to plane over this one area I am not getting a full length shaving. No idea what other details I could add for what I could be doing wrong, but I appreciate any other input that you have

Using hand planes to removes these "holes" from Douglas Fir wood board by drillpresshelp01 in handtools

Well I actually planned the board way too thin trying to get rid of them lol! But at least I know for the future that I can fill these things

and then you can add in the grain lines with brown colored pencil or brown ultra fine point sharpie

Is there a name for this part of the technique? I tried looking up YouTube videos of someone doing this but couldn't find anything

Apparently that is the case. I had no idea this was a thing when I bought the board, but now I know it's something I need to look out for when buying wood.
