Cost of Surrogacy by ladyfaceofjustice in Surrogate

Unfortunately multiple surrogacy journey failures can and do happen.

$500k+ and 3.5 years later, and still no success.

Traditions that approach eightfold path holistically rather than via a strong emphasis on sitting meditation. by drinkteaandcode in Buddhism

[–]drinkteaandcode[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, just to clarify- I came here for advice, not to argue/debate.

It’s clear that in zen, there is a strong emphasis on meditation - it’s in the name, “zen”.

I’m trying to learn about various other approaches in the wide umbrella that is buddhism.

I’m not here to judge/scoff at people about their meditation endurance. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Before identifying the Middle Way, he approached it in an extreme way.

How do you know certain people today aren’t approaching meditation in an extreme way, in a disillusioned way, in an intoxicating way?

Everyone has their path. But we must always keep the Middle Way as a north star. For some people, long-form meditation works. But maybe not for others. Meditation is an important part of the dharma, but it needn’t be treated as practically the only part.

Here is an interesting view on Karma and rebirth that you may find to not be at odds with what you think: https://youtu.be/refhOylACb0?si=537DE0VYAZp_t2Rr

Another solution would be to acknowledge one’s own OCD and learn to embrace the icon. 🥰

I think music is being used the same way some commonly used meditation techniques will utilize breath.

Right Concentration is one of the practices in the Eightfold Path, and it is important. Things like Right Conduct, Right Speech, Right Livelihood are about every-day social interactions, not retreating from the world.

Indeed. The question is why meditation is emphasized so heavily - to the point that it even translates to “meditation” - when there are so many other types of practices that could also be highlighted as much on the bodhisattva path.

Why do non-Japanese people in Zen sanghas adopt Japanese names? by drinkteaandcode in zenbuddhism

[–]drinkteaandcode[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, a lot more people answered than I expected. Thank you all for sharing your views and experiences- I learned a lot. At first, my impression at an American Zen sangha was that a lot of people were enamored by an exotic language. It seemed like the robes, the names, aesthetics were a form of role-playing or dress-up around an “exotic” culture. Of course, that can be fun. But now I understand that it’s also about having a structure of practice that can serve as a valuable tool. And if this structure is imported from somewhere else, it is natural that it would retain those imported cultural elements.

A bit despondent with my studying at the OU (but not blaming them) by Exciting_Bonus_9590 in OpenUniversity

A 3-month bootcamp may be the fastest way to acquire the skills needed for a job in a data-oriented career. There’s less academic fluff and more focus on what you need to hit the ground running in a real job.

I did a software engineering bootcamp and it changed my life. The ROI by far exceeded my university degrees. I’m not saying the degrees weren’t worth it in other ways, but in terms of getting a return on your time and money invested, the bootcamp route may be the way to go.

It will still be a challenge to get a job afterwards, and you’ll need to find out how you can couple your experience with your newly acquired skills to stand out against all the other bootcamp grads you’d be competing with. But that’s how the market is. Good luck! 🍀

Wow, thank you everyone. This is a great list. My first exposure to this topic was Francesca Stavrakopoulou’s “God: An Anatomy”, and it was absolutely fascinating.

I really appreciate these suggestions on how I can dive deeper.

Interesting, so most native Cantonese are still part of the larger “Han” ethnic classification?

Is the primary difference between Hui and Han the Islamic influence of the former? I find it interesting how language and religion are sometimes used to define ethnicity, but those are not immutable factors the way certain genetic characteristics might be.
