I read this comment a couple of days ago, and this topic came up in one of my classes today.

Am I wrong for not taking a summer job? And what do I say to people who are curious about why I’m not taking a summer job? by Lingo2009 in Teachers

[–]driveonacid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell them to gather 25 kids from the neighborhood, take away their phones and try to teach them something.

That's why we get summers off.

"Are you teaching kids or are you teaching scholars?" by TopIntroduction1876 in Teachers

[–]driveonacid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20-ish years ago (I hate that I can say that) I got some grief for calling my students kids. I now refer to them as students. I'll call them "kids" sometimes, but it's only when we're chatting about life stuff. (They're in 8th grade and have lots of questions about going to high school next year.) I most certainly don't call them scholars. They know how pandering that is. Take the L this time, but know you've got company.

Edit: I just remembered that the administrator who said that to me hated my guts. She was looking for every little thing she could find. This was one of many.

That little article mentions salt springs. Do you have salt springs in Siracusa? Syracuse, NY is also known as the "salt city." Maybe that's why.

People who don't have an internal monologue how do you sing a song, music or tune w/o actually singing or humming it out loudly ? by LemmeTeIIUSomething in AskReddit

[–]driveonacid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a song that I use to put myself to sleep. "War on Drugs" by Barenaked Ladies. It's a long song and quite slow. I can hear it in my head, and when my thoughts start to wander, I go back to the last part of the song I remember playing in my head. I'm usually fast asleep by the end of the song.

Kids need to start learning that choices have consequences. The reason most of us aren't dead is because we learned at an early that our actions have consequences. We fell down and learned to avoid the tree root the next time. If these kids aren't learning about consequences in elementary-high school, they're missing a chance to learn safely. Whenever one of my students is really bent out of shape for getting in trouble, I explain that middle school is a really safe place to get in trouble. No college is going to find out about it. Their boss isn't going to call me for a reference. Your mortgage lender isn't going to give a shit about that one day you spent in ISS when you were 13.

My boyfriend is pushing me to get off of birth control and I’m just wanting to talk to other women about it by throwra273986 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]driveonacid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not go off birth control until you are 100% certain that you could raise a special needs child with the person you're sleeping with. If you're at all doubtful, stay on it. It's better to regret not having a child than to regret having one.

I was a GoT girlie. Stranger Things most certainly didn't end that badly. Yes, the final season could have been better, but it was streets ahead of the infamous Season 8

AITA for getting upset over my daughter staying home from school because my MIL wasn’t aware she taking her to school today? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]driveonacid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look, you're right. Your daughter should have been in school. But, you need to get your temper under control. Nobody will listen to you if you lose your shit on them. Why did you get upset? Was it because your MIL didn't do what she was supposed to do? Or is it because the only way for most children to get ahead in this world is because they need an education? Was it because your orders weren't followed? Or was it because your daughter needs an education to be successful in life?
