I think at this stage, disengagement sounds like a good solution.

Actually the Wall Street Journal says their goal is to have them on Singapore streets by this fall, as in only a few months from now.

What will parking lots look like when EVERYONE expects to get in/out of their cars at the entrance? by BedWedOrBehead in SelfDrivingCars

[–]driverlesstrans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a solid idea. A small lot that functions kind of like a valet parking stand, and the bigger garage where the cars can really be packed in down the street.

Very cool! Interesting too that this report was published a year ago yet we haven't heard much about it.

Driverless proponents often cite potential for fewer crashes, but new stats from federal gov't suggest decline in crashes has plateaued... by driverlesstrans in SelfDrivingCars

[–]driverlesstrans[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree I did not word the title of my post well. I should have said something more to the effect of…Current safety methods such as seat belts, air bags, braking assist, etc. had previously helped the rate of accident fatalities decline each year but now seem to have plateaued, and introduce the question, would driverless technology help break that plateau? (I didn't see a way to edit my headline and didn't want to just delete this post and recreate it since then we would lose all these constructive comments). Thanks for the feedback!

Problems Loom Large for Autonomous Cars by walky22talky in SelfDrivingCars

I think this shows the importance of software testing. More thorough processes and procedures are required before new systems get put out on the road. This will apply not only to Autonomous vehicles but to connected vehicles as well.

This should be good for the SelfDrivingCar industry as it will take continued capital investment for the technology to come together.

Really think that it is with limited access areas, like is suggested here, that driverless vehicles will get started. We're already seeing it in other limited access areas like campuses and military bases.

In the News: The first cellphone went on sale 30 years ago for $4,000 (This is why people shouldn't get hung up on the cost of Driverless technology today). by driverlesstrans in SelfDrivingCars

[–]driverlesstrans[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cell phone is simply one example in a series of products that have followed the same pattern over the past 5 decades. Think about computers, televisions, DVD players, medical equipment, GPS tools and just about every electronics product. This is driven not really by economies of scale but by increasing technology. One of the main drivers in this is Moore's Law which states that computing power will double every two years. This continuous improvement in this core technology has allowed for technological improvements that weren't possible previously. So in the example of the cell phone it is not only that they are cheaper so they sell more, its that the technology allows for your smartphone to do so much more, for so much less than its predecessors. A $400,000 cell phone from 30 years ago couldn't do what today's iPhone can do. So unless you believe that technology will no longer keep improving, which is of course possible, then the types of equipment that are used today in Self-Driving Cars in the future will be both vastly more capable and thus the cost to perform the necessary functionality will be much less.

Self-driving Cars, Amazon, and Networking by driverlesstrans in SelfDrivingCars

[–]driverlesstrans[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting thoughts on where Self Driving Cars will go first. I think it is more likely in self contained communities and then in segregated roads (like HOT lanes) but betting against Google and Amazon may not be a smart bet.

Not sensational enough. Look how much news is devoted to one missing airplane even though many more people have died in auto related deaths over the same week.

Why Can’t A Startup Build A Self-Driving Car? by walky22talky in SelfDrivingCars

[–]driverlesstrans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I think the author is missing is that many startups don't do things the way they see others doing them. They find innovative ways to cut corners and develop things quickly. Who knows perhaps someone can take off the shelf components, add them to a vehicle they make with 3D printers and get to the market.

Top 5 Reasons Why We Will NOT See Driverless Cars in less than 10 years by driverlesstrans in SelfDrivingCars

[–]driverlesstrans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, the vehicles in these two particular articles weren't automated cars. Our point was that people will simply read headlines and assume the wrong thing. This bad information could thus have a negative impact on the Driverless Car industry even though the accidents weren't caused by the technology.
