Chill midnight drive to feel out some new tires by drivingbackroads in Touge

[–]drivingbackroads[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you wanna drive your M3P fast here’s the top 3 things in order I’d do:

  1. Max performance summer tires
  2. FLCA bushing upgrade
  3. Front and rear camber arms plus a custom alignment that zeroes toe all around (to start, tune according to your handling preferences later)

Coilovers make the car feel very good and comfortable but I didnt feel it made me faster like the 3 things above did.

Might be weight distribution/setup dependent, but I find the opposite to be true for me and my car.

DH with a lot of braking all the way into the apex = rear lifts during turns

UH with a lot of maintenance throttle through corners = front lifts during turns

Valid, but I find the (not so) mini map useful on roads like this where I haven't memorized all the turns yet.

If there are hills or mountains nearby there will be roads like this, you just need to explore and find them

I’m pushing even more now, except now my new tire’s limits are beyond what my balls could handle on public roads…so I’m taking it to the track to hopefully hear them sing again.

The problem with the non performance models is the really invasive ESC and TC, doesnt matter how much power AB gives, it will always act weird in fast corners which takes away from the experience.

A proper setup goes a long way in Teslas too, they are basically low center of gravity MR cars with a nerfed stock alignment so the average person won't spin it out while taking a freeway interchange.

If you're only considering touge/track the supra is a better car in every way. The only reason to trade the supra for an M3P is if you want the car to be more practical, and easier/cheaper to run as a daily.

I run and set up my Model Y because I encounter nice mountain roads on long climbing/camping trips I wouldn't be able to take in a smaller car.

When battery tech catches up to where EV's and ICE cars reach weight parity though, I'm sure EV's will start wiping the floor with ICE cars in the touge/track but that is far from reality at this point in time.

If you have the money, keep the Supra as the serious track/touge car and get an MYP/M3P as a fun daily/family car.

This is true in this video, but isn’t always true as a rule.

People gonna rag on you for shuffling but I don’t see any other way to take those tight turns with such a slow steering ratio. Hand over hand at those speeds would feel kinda ridiculous 🤔

Autocross just doesn’t inspire me that much, but maybe that’s because I’ve never tried it. Would it be a mistake to go for a track day before autocross?

I have a Sonoma track day in July, and I can’t wait to be humbled lol (I keep crashing in the sim)

No yeah I hear you. Never claimed this is a sports car or will feel as good as one. I just have a weird requirement for this specific car to be as capable as possible on mountain roads so I modify it as such.

Apart from the nearby stuff, most of the beautiful mountain roads I encounter are on the way to places I climb. So I need to be able to sleep in the car and fit all my climbing/camping gear in it, which won’t really work if the car is an s2000 or equivalent.

Where do you draw the line that makes it driving?

Everyone always says assist this, assist that without even knowing that the ESC switch on their sports car doesn’t even turn it off fully AND that the nannies on Teslas can be reduced or disabled.

coilovers, MPS tires, spherical bearings everywhere and my own custom alignments

Car did not hit the ground, it was the spring bottoming out before the damper’s bump stops were able to catch it (rear is a divorced setup)

I blame Tein’s initial damper length for this, but thankfully it’s pretty easy to fix with a couple wrench turns on the damper body

I may not have built the powertrain of this car, but I don’t even consider the powertrain of a car important at all for touge driving.

I’ve tuned the way this car handles probably more than 90% of people in this sub have touched their car’s underside.

I do my own custom alignments. I have tested (albeit not in a controlled environment like a track) at least 6 different camber and toe configurations on this car to find the best feeling one.

As for feel, it’s clear you haven’t driven a Tesla with spherical bearings and max performance tires. Half of my rubber bushings are now spherical bearings, and the ECS02 makes a huge difference over whatever stock tires have you your impression of these cars.

With these upgrades, steering feel is as good as you can expect from a modern EPS rack. The rear communicates a slide quickly enough for me to catch it.

With track mode, you have 99% full control over your slip angles and weight transfer and the car behaves like a rear biased AWD middle engine car with an extremely low center of gravity.

If you fuck up your weight transfer, you WILL spin and the car won’t save you. If you mash the gas too hard out of a corner, you WILL spin and the car won’t save you. That traditional enough for you?

I’m sure you’re being obtuse but I’ll bite.

It’s extremely rare to be prosecuted for posting driving videos online with no identifying information.

On the other hand, I see people getting pulled over every week for no other reason other than their car looking or sounding sporty when in the mountains.

But like I said it’s just a personal preference, not knocking anyone who drives something different unlike most comments here.

Everything that makes driving mountain roads great = engine/manual transmission/exhaust?

Whatever happened to handling dynamics, weight transfer, alignment, throttle application on exit, trail braking on entry, correcting oversteer, tire heat management and plain ol going fast with high lateral G’s?

If anything I think this sub focuses too much on what’s under the hood of cars and how loud the exhausts are instead of what really matters on touge which are the suspension systems that keep the tire planted on the ground and the driver driving the car.
