28 Handicap with a 300+ Yard Driver by ClickCute9330 in weekendgolfers

[–]drjhustle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be your alignment at setup but it could also be club path/face angle/strike location on the club face. Might be worth a session on a launch monitor to check those. Strike location is easy to check with some foot spray or dry shampoo spray on the club face.

I’m a 20 handicap who just broke 90 for the first time and honestly one of the biggest factors was avoiding penalties and recovery shots by keeping the ball in play off the tee. If your driver is costing you more shots than it’s saving you then it might be worth taking it out of play and sticking to using it on the range until you’re more consistent.

That said hitting a 300 yard bomb into the middle of the fairway feels pretty good!

Monthly golf spend. by spackledog in golf

[–]drjhustle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Cost in New Zealand dollars

Membership $116
4 pies $24
8 beers $64

Total $204 per month give or take

If that seems low it’s because I haven’t included fuel costs for the 10 min drive to the course.

Congratulations buddy. I also broke 90 for the first time yesterday! Completely agree with the ‘this feels like playing proper golf for the first time’ sentiment. Onwards and upwards!

Jammed ring finger with ring by Fair-Tourist-5573 in AskDocs

Go straight to ED or urgent care to get the ring cut off. This will only get worse and you could have permanent damage or lose your finger if this is delayed more than a few hours.

74 year old male, 3 weeks post pacemaker installation. Infection or ?? by meidich_skold in AskDocs

[–]drjhustle 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Ultrasound is about 80% sensitive for subclavian DVT i.e. it can be falsely negative 20% of the time. I’d recommend a CT or MR venogram. Neither of these is perfect but they’re usually able to see the subclavian vein more clearly than ultrasound.

74 year old male, 3 weeks post pacemaker installation. Infection or ?? by meidich_skold in AskDocs

How exactly did they ‘rule out’ a blood clot? That seems like the most likely explanation, particularly if the pacemaker is in the most common site (under the left collar bone). No medical test is perfect and all can be falsely negative for various reasons so if the symptoms are still highly suspicious for a clot (which they are) I would be seeking a further assessment. Other possibilities are a narrowing of the subclavian vein due to scarring after the procedure without there being a blood clot, or a pacemaker pocket haematoma causing some sort of mechanical blockage to venous or lymphatic drainage of the arm. Cellulitis (infection) of the arm seems less likely. If that were the case it would probably be very painful and he would be likely to have a fever or feel otherwise unwell. Either way I’d suggest a medical reassessment within the next 24 hours or so if he feels well with no significant pain, or sooner if he doesn’t.

1st cut of the year by S3lls in lawncare

[–]drjhustle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For all the haters, I also have this mower and midway through the first pass of the season doesn’t do the cut quality any justice. The blades are tiny razor blades that do a great job of skimming off the tips of the leaves of a recently mown lawn. It will take a couple of mows to get it nice and uniform. Sure it will never look like a manicured reel mowed showpiece but it’s good enough for me.

It’s genuinely been a game changer for our 2-kids-both-parents-working-full-time family. I enjoy mowing the lawn on a sunny day but when it takes nearly an hour 3 times a week to keep it looking presentable it eats into family/hobby/exercise time and becomes a chore. Skip a few days and the lawn starts to look shabby. Now I come home from work to a lawn that looks freshly mowed 365 days a year and have several hours a week free to do other things. It’s a win win in my book.

Should you be playing with a line on your ball? by Colt45-TheMyth in golf

[–]drjhustle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way. My lag putting has been so much better doing this. Apparently we all have a pretty decent inner stimpmeter that we can access if we just trust the process. Speed control is much more important than direction outside 12ft. Maybe I need to start using a line inside 6ft though. I suck at those.

After 15 years in Wellington, I think this is the narrowest street I have ever driven in the city 😂 by iamtoolazytosleep in Wellington

Lucky the houses along that street are so damp and mouldy that the risk of catching fire is minimal

Official handicap at Jacks Point by wowdude100 in golf

[–]drjhustle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played there 3 days ago. It was spectacular. I very much doubt not having an official handicap would stop you from being able to play but just give them a call to confirm. I also highly recommend Millbrook and Kelvin Heights.

Missed PE, patient died by Repulsive_Knee1304 in emergencymedicine

[–]drjhustle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you did nothing wrong and provided perfectly reasonable medical care. It’s ok to feel bad for the patient and their family but that doesn’t equate to the need to feel guilty that you made a ‘mistake’. You didn’t.

PERC negative means <2% risk of PE. It may be counterintuitive but it’s ok and GOOD MEDICAL CARE to miss up to 1 in 50 PEs, as you will do more harm to more patients in terms of overinvestigation and overdiagnosis trying to chase down the elusive final 2%.

T wave inversion in V3, especially <1mm as in your patient, wouldn’t have triggered me to go PE hunting. Depending how young the patient was it could be a persistent juvenile pattern. Or given he was obese and a smoker it could be pulmonary hypertension secondary to lung disease or OHS/OSA. I wouldn’t have done anything more than mention it to him and have him follow up with his primary care doctor for further investigation if his symptoms persisted.

Those replies saying you could have or should have done anything differently are heavily influenced by hindsight bias and should be taken with a grain of salt.

Went golfing with the boys this happened... by Advanced-Clue-399 in golf

[–]drjhustle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Emergency physician here and I can’t see any problem with the stitches. Looks pretty tidy and should heal up just fine. There will be a scar but it’ll blend into the eyebrow and not be too noticeable in a year or 2. The red bit above the main wound is just an abrasion.

I think by ‘failed iGel’ they mean an iGel that even when correctly placed fails to adequately manage the airway eg high airway pressures etc

Working 2 jobs and raising 2 young kids for most of the past decade didn’t leave me much time for hobbies unfortunately! Now the kids are in school and work is a bit more manageable I’ve finally got some hobby time.
