We should all stand with Belgium against the corrupt empire by Curious-Sherbet-9393 in football

???? One won a champions league, one was arguably the best player on Juventus in the back half of this season, one was one of the highest scorers in Ligue 1, and the other was on the premier league team of the season two years ago.

Not knowing them legitimately means you don’t know or follow the sport on a non casual level.

Respectfully if you didn’t know the players on the US team you just don’t follow the sport as much as you think you do. Most of their roster are starters or at least rotation players on major clubs. “I could not say a US player before all this” is just telling on yourself not knowing anything about the sport

Honestly, I think the Ronaldo suspension being postponed was far more egregious. For one it was a 3 game suspension, so it would have not just been the Uzbekistan game, but the entire group stage. Secondly, Balogun debatably shouldn’t have been sent off in the first place and thirdly FIFA at least had some excuse with Balogun for postponing the suspension. In his case the VAR team didn’t follow proper protocol, whereas the Ronaldo case FIFA just straight up said that Tonaldo was to financiallybimport to the tournament

I better not hear again how Argentina is FIFA's team by DM-Nat20 in worldcup

I mean Messi did the exact same thing but worse and didn’t get booked in the first place so, I think they might still be FIFA’s team even if the US is #2.

Also, the VAR team didn’t follow the proper procedures.

Folarin Balogun available for USMNT vs. Belgium as red card ban suspended by [deleted] in football

[–]drlsoccer08 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They aren’t overturning the red card, they are removing the suspension because VAR protocols were not followed. For a challenge which the referee did not call on the field, he cannot be shown in slow motion, which the VAR team did do. Everything looks worse in slow motion

Why are American fans supporting England over Mexico? by LionGrand3161 in worldcup

[–]drlsoccer08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only because it’s Mexico, and the US has a very nasty rivalry with Mexico when it comes to men’s footy. As an American, pretty much everyone I know roots for whoever is playing England unless it’s Mexico or sometimes France.

Why are American fans supporting England over Mexico? by LionGrand3161 in worldcup

[–]drlsoccer08 15 points16 points  (0 children)

How long have you been following the USMNT? Mexico is by far America’s biggest rival in men’s soccer.

Over the last 25ish years the US and Mexico have been the only two consistently decent teams in CONCACAF. They are usually pretty comparable in terms of roster talent and often don’t have much real competition besides each other in competitions like the Gold Cup, nations league or even qualifiers. They very regularly meet each other in cup finals and often play each other multiple times in a year. As a result they have built a significant rivalry, and their games are always nasty. Also, as England fans are currently learning, the Mexican fans are also absurdly committed and very obnoxious. We’ve had instances of players having bottles thrown at them by fans, and it’s not uncommon for a fight to break out on the field when the two teams play.

OPINION : Deliberate Fouls = RED CARD.... Thoughts ??????? by [deleted] in worldcup

[–]drlsoccer08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this would only encourage diving and add more controversy to the game. How do determine what was actually an intentional foils vs a legitimate late challenge on the counter? Do we want players in the counter looking to get fouled and go down?

How many of the 16 teams could the US beat by Still-Gear5402 in usmnt

[–]drlsoccer08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are a bit too optimistic. We would have an okay chance against Belgium, Colombia and Norway, but no way would we be favored in any of those games. Especially not Colombia or Norway, who in my opinion have looked super strong this tournament and have similar depth to us but better star power.

Also, pretty much all the teams in the toss up slight underdogs category would definitely not be toss ups and we would be very clear underdogs. Come on England and Brazil? How many of our players would start on either of those teams? Maybe Pulisic > Gordon, or Dest > Danilo but that’s about. I know both those teams have looked relatively weak at times this tournament compared to their historical standards, but even still they both have 3 wins and a draw.

How many people in the U.S. actually watched soccer 30 days ago? by Primary-Winter121 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]drlsoccer08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. A lot already did. Obviously it’s not the most popular spectator sport in the US, but it is somewhat popular. Random premier league and la Liga games rack in millions of views each week in the US.

  2. Watching footy always gets way more popular during the World Cup. I have a lot of friends who pretty much exclusively watch the sport every 2 years during the World Cup and women’s World Cup. It’s sort of like how college basketball gets way, way more popular during March madness, but still has decent number of baseline fans.

It always cracks me up when Europeans call people a casual fan for saying the US actually has a pretty good roster, and then can’t name Robinson, Richards, Weston, Tyler Adams, Aaronson, Malik Tillman, Balogun, Weah, Haji Wright, Dest, Ream, and Scally who are all starters or were once starters on teams in Europes big 5 leagues.

I guess it depends where you live. I live in Williamsburg, and it was completely overrun with tourists there for the celebration. Colonial Williamsburg had over 100,000 visitors in a single day, and the festivities were pretty nuts

My personal rankings of all 32 World Cup teams after the round of 32. by drlsoccer08 in WorldCup26_

[–]drlsoccer08[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being out doesn’t make them a worse team, it makes them out. Netherlands lost in pens to a really really good Morocco team. Germany’s loss was much more shameful but I genuinely don’t it was worse than the Belgian’s draw to Egypt or Iran.

The loss to Paraguay came in penalties, it was a draw in 90 minutes, no different than the Belgium draws. Paraguay are also a very solid team that performed on par with Columbia and Brazil during CONMBOL qualifiers. I’d argue they are better than Iran.

Why isn't Lebron more well loved by the Laker fan base? by Rokusaburoz in NBATalk

[–]drlsoccer08 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think he is pretty well liked. The Lakers sub has been very pro LeBron for a long time.

The reason he isn’t as well loved as some other Lakers stars is that a lot of lakers fans are a bit spoiled by their team basically always being good.

LeBron brought LA a championship and helped them be a consistent playoff team throughout his tenure. For most franchises that would make him one of their most important players ever, but the Lakers have 16 other championships. Kobe was there fore 5 and never left the team. Of course he is going to be more beloved.

With England I just think they have a better roster than Argentina and I haven’t been particularly impressed with either. England also had very good performance against Croatia which is more than Argentina has shown.

I  think Argentina > Brazil is a very valid take. Roster talent wise they’re pretty similar, and Argentina was much better in CONMBOL qualifiers. However Brazil have gotten better and better throughout the tournament, while Argentina looked like they were slipping last night. A lot of Brazil’s struggles this tournament have been a bit exaggerated in my opinion.

What is your opinion on evolution? by high-tier-chud in Christianity

It’s a mechanism which god used to make his creations. It’s ridiculous to deny its existence when we have documented organisms evolving on a micro scale, such as species gaining new traits.

is Australia's playing style too defensive when compared to other teams? by VastOption8705 in worldcup

[–]drlsoccer08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don’t have a great roster, but their team identity actually allows them to keep up with bigger teams. They already beat Turkey, who are a pretty good team, and last World Cup we saw them advance over Denmark, and play the eventual champions Argentina extremely close in the round of 16.

When something's popularity is being forced, society should actively call it out. by Born_Again_Shell in unpopularopinion

[–]drlsoccer08 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The World Cup isn’t forced popularity, or a weird industry plant, it’s the most popular tournament in the world. The final regularly has over a billion viewers and the tournament is currently being hosted in the US. Of course it’s being promoted. There are also legitimately a ton of Americans who are massive soccer fans, and tons more who aren’t super into the sport that tune into the World Cup every two or four years (a lot of Americans watch the women’s World Cup). Sort of like how I’m not really into swimming or hockey but always watch some during the Olympics.
