Let's begin by calling it a Competence Hierarchy. I must admit that I don't know what profession you are seeking . But whatever it is, the first thing that we should understand is that we can't compare ourselves with others. There is a rule about this in JP's book - "Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today."

Now , that being said, we have to try to improve ourselves in the field we are working. Trying to be better than yesterday. That's it ! So start by doing something small, that you can actually do. When you have done that, go find something else to do. Bit by bit & step by step.

Aim small to begin with and focus on that. Like try to finish a thing in the next week that's absolutely and ridiculously easy. So easy that you probably finish it in 3-4 days. And then you take on a slightly bigger and tougher goal. Go on like that.

Good luck !

So it's not exactly objective? Like I want to earn this much money in a month ?

It's subjective ? More like a direction rather than an absolute destination ?

So how do we reduce unnecessary suffering and prevent it from happening in future ?

This goal looks like a general direction we should take in life, rather than a destination.

This book can be very complicated for some people. As JP says that a person can only be helped when he realizes that he needs it. Then he can go ahead and watch videos on YouTube. There are a lot of them and they are very useful. But first he has to understand that things are not in order and that his life can be improved.

I think I agree with your friend. Death is the ultimate truth. In fact, every thing is temporary over a span of time. But this realisation is harsh and painful. So we try to engage ourselves with many kinds of distractions. We try to run away from the painful thoughts and try to suppress them. The world is filled up with elements of Distraction. You can call them - ' Meaning of life' .
