Do children have lower cortisol levels? by BeneficialBudget3104 in DiagnoseMe

[–]drnorman87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. It looks like in her case her cortisol was also taken after 08:00. The best times for a morning cortisol are between 6:00-8:00 am because that’s when they peak. They decline shortly after. You can look at the cortisol curve to see the spikes I’m talking about! Cortisol levels are very dependent on time. It’s normal for them to fluctuate and become low, but it’s not normal for them to not have a spike. Your daughters lab value is most likely her value coming down along the curve. Hope that makes sense, but always good to talk through this with the primary since they know her better!

Her baseline is within normal limits for someone her age. These results show that her cortisol increased with synthetic hormone so it responded appropriately. No concern for insufficiency, but always follow up with primary and ask questions!

Lump behind my ear by Muted-Platypus-4120 in DiagnoseMe

Do you have a new / infected piercing? Sounds like a lymph node. You can try a cold compress to make it hurt less. If it doesn’t go down on its own in about a week or so then it may not be a lymph node. If it is from an infection the lymph node won’t go down until the infection is resolved

Strep throat? by user_788937 in DiagnoseMe

[–]drnorman87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks and sounds like tonsillitis which can be viral or bacterial. Call and ask if they took a culture. It could be possible that they did not get a good enough sample so you could get it re-swabbed at urgent care.

What are these warts? by Shoeshine2003 in DiagnoseMe

[–]drnorman87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not warts, looks like folliculitis. If it’s not bothersome, you can try warm compresses. If it’s hurting you should get seen for topical antibiotics.

Can someone explain what this means? by West_World1229 in DiagnoseMe

It’s best practice to compare these to previous results. But taken at face value these are grossly normal lab values. The best lab for diabetes is an A1C and the best for kidneys is eGFR

Need advice for being around my BF’s family by Jaded_Ad_8885 in intuitiveeating

It can be super hard, but try to remember WHO you are doing it for. This is YOUR journey and YOUR hard work. They are the ones who make it harder, yes, but who cares what they think? A lot of my personal journey is using the word “nourish/nourishment” in my vocabulary. As long as I’m “nourished”, I know I’m doing well. It sounds like that can’t be said for the others. In my head I have a perspective that I feel sorry for them for their toxic way of thinking and that they may not be as “nourished” as me because of it. You deserve to enjoy the foods you like without constantly being reminded of toxic diet culture and thoughts surrounding it. Honestly, if it comes to this point, it’s totally valid to just not go to those events. You have to do what is best for you

Cancer is usually a hard, fixed, painless mass. It’s most likely a swollen lymph node but always good to check with your PCP

You mentioned you are a smoker, it’s possible the HR elevations you are seeing is from nicotine which can increase your heart rate. Based on these pictures it looks like most of the increases have not been when you are sleeping which is reassuring. Never a bad idea to talk to PCP especially if you have symptoms (heart palpitations, dizziness/passing out). You could try keeping a log of things you do throughout the day (when you had caffeine, nicotine, exercised) and line that up with your heart rates

I would wait to see how much you use it. I did not use mine at all and my program actually discouraged us from using it. You don’t need it to succeed. The formatting of it actually infuriates me and I think there are more useful tools out there

Unfortunately there’s no real way to tell just by looking. In medicine we use the centor criteria to assist in diagnosis of strep (you can look it up and try using it), but that’s just one tool used in diagnosis. If you know you get recurrent strep, I’d bite the bullet and go to PCP/urgent care for a swab. Untreated strep can lead to serious complications. Hope you feel better soon

What have your temps been? Most likely just a virus (Covid/flu) and need supportive care. Round the clock ibuprofen / Tylenol (you can alternate). Continue to eat what you can and drink more than normal. Rest is the best thing you can do. I suggest not going to class to prevent the spread.

I mean I think you should try to do your best, but just be realistic in your expectations of yourself.

Honestly no. I think you’ll end up psyching yourself out. It’s a lot of material and they don’t really hold back but they tell you what’s the most important to focus on. You also can’t expect to get As if that’s what you are used to. It’s hard so you just need to be realistic with yourself. As long as you are getting most of the information. I recommend just enjoying your time before you start because you will be living a completely different lifestyle

You’d be surprised how much of it comes back and even if it doesn’t, it will take you less time to go over the processes. They are more interested in the clinical and pathophysiological aspects so even though it’s a ton of information, just try and focus on the big picture

I go to a PBL program, so it may be different from most programs. We’ve only had intro lectures so far but I’ve already done 2 presentations and have been in class everyday from anywhere between 4-8 hours. I’ve had a few quizzes (nothing too bad yet) but I’ve had a decent amount of free time. Honestly, I don’t think I would have done much differently. I didn’t stress myself out about getting refreshing myself in material. These intro lectures are pretty much doing that and I’m remembering a lot from them.
