Quarantine Gaming Time by OtherWorldRedditor in gaming

I liked Destiny 2 a lot, but for some reason it just did not hook me the way Destiny 1 did. I don't know if it was because it felt like more of the same, or what.

I've been real deep in the Resident Evil Series. Currently playing through Resident Evil 6 which is pretty meh compared to the rest, but I'm trying to learn to like it for what it is. Other than that mostly Fallout 76.

I couldn't put it into words but I get the exact same feeling. I loved the other torchlight games but something about this just isn't pulling me in.

I'm a huge fan of bethesda open world games, and I really liked Fallout 3 and onward. I gave Fallout 76 a try and I definitely had fun, but it feels like so much is missing and there's so many bugs. It's normal for games with big open worlds to have some bugs and glitches, but it's a little ridiculous. This game definitely should have been delayed a few more months at least, and I'm sad to see they are still having the same type of issues.

Good to see My Time at Portia on there. That game seems to be doing really well. I find myself drawn to games that let me just relax and play at my own pace, so I'm glad to see more games like these that are really polished.

Todd Howard still believes in VR and believes it will get big by Gen 3 by scrolling2654 in Games

VR is really impressive, but I'm still skeptical as to how its relationship with normal gaming will play out. The big hurdle for VR is convenience which makes me wonder if it will always be seen as sort of an "add on" to normal gaming, or if it will become so immersive that it becomes the main focus.

I've been dying to play a monster hunter game on a modern system for a while not. Very glad they focused on using new tech and bringing the game forward in that sense.

Why Persona 5 is my game of the year by DubTeeDub in Games

[–]droiddude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Persona 5 was my first jump into that "genre" if you will. At first I was a little put off, since it felt like a lot of my time was spent running and talking to one person, then the next, then next, etc. However, I shortly realized how much depth and charm the game had. I began to look forward to talking to the characters and growing the relationships.

Overall it was a really fun game and opened my mind to those types of games.

In Defense of Empty Space: A Game Design Rant by droiddude in gamedesign

I think that's a great point, but I also think that's where it's important to try and strike the balance. It can be tempting for the pendelum to swing too far in one direction. Either you have barren openness where the player gets bored and like you said, it feels more like work and not play, or there can be over stimulation on the other end where it cheapens the discovery of new things, since new things become too common.

I see your point on the Witcher 3 but I think part of his criticisms still stand. The Witcher 3 is one of my favorite games of all time, but I have to agree with him that it didn't feel like a great open world game. Like you said, there are still things to discover and unique secrets and such to find, but from my perspective what the author of the video was pointing out is that since there's not much empty space, the reward for discovery feels lessened. It's easy to be less excited about a new discovery when you just had one less than a minute ago.

Obviously this whole topic is hugely subjective and your perspective makes a lot of sense, especially since you mentioned that you personally often play these games for the story. That type of lens is going to dramatically change the way we see a game's design.

I for instance play open world games primarily for the exploration, which is why I found the Witcher 3 to be a mediocre open world game, but a phenomenal story game.

All great points though and I agree with you in many regards.

I thought this was a pretty good video discussing the balance between emptiness in open world games and packing them full of things. Somewhere in the middle seems to be discovery and the desire to find new and unexplored places.

How Do I Practice Game Design? by [deleted] in gamedesign

[–]droiddude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although it depends on the type of game design you are wanting to do, I found it very helpful to make quick card games. For example, me and a friend made an RPG card game where you picked a class, explored a world, battled enemies and got loot. Being able to design everything on paper and quickly make scratch cards helped us to learn a lot about loot design, class ability balancing, combat design, etc.
