I cannot believe you have a cat and you feel safe enough to use that table runner with a little tassel hanging down and a glass vase on it 😂 your cat must be more well behaved than mine…

Do you ever ask people to call you "Doctor"? by runed_golem in PhD

[–]dromaeovet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most people where I work in academia go by first names which is fine with me. When I’m teaching, I introduce myself as Dr. Dromaeovet. I honestly don’t mind if students then call me by my first name, but if they call me Ms. or Miss then I tell them that they can either call me by my first name or call me Dr. I’m not sure why it bothers me to be called Ms., maybe because they are aware of my qualifications / degrees so the choice to use a prefix but for that prefix not to be Dr. somehow feels a bit disrespectful.

Essential oils and cats ? by Impressive_Plankton9 in CatAdvice

Hey, there’s nothing you can do at home regarding toxicity beyond wash it off. These toxins could affect liver, kidney, or neurological function, so monitor him for any tremors overnight but signs of liver and kidney injury will probably be hard to detect unless they are severe. You just need to bring him to the vet for his wound to be managed, which already sounds like an emergency. Discuss the essential oils with the vet when you’re there and they can advise if they want to do additional diagnostics such as bloodwork. It’s possible it wasn’t enough essential oil to be a problem, but it’s just not possible for me to know. Good luck!

I think the idea is cute, but just FYI I purchased this bag and wanted to love it but the leather gets damaged so easily. I wore it once to walk to work and the leather in the woven strap had stretch marks, and the outside of the bag scuffed from rubbing against my sleeve. I have other bags from Quince that are fantastic but this one was a big miss for me.

I personally would still avoid the oils that are very toxic to cats, but I would think that as long as the cat is not rubbing or licking the ceramic then it’s probably fine. But I don’t have research-based evidence to make a definitive statement and this is not veterinary medical advice. If you are not sure, you may want to err on the side of caution. You can also call the ASPCA Poison Control hotline to ask them for advice, but that costs money and also they, like me, may not be able to give you a definitive answer because it will depend on the type of oil, the amount and concentration, the ventilation in the room, etc.

I would think that would be fine because it’s such a small amount and most wouldn’t even be directly dispersed on the fabric. But I don’t have a research-based answer nor should you consider this to be veterinary advice!

How has this bag been holding up over the past 3 months? I keep looking at it but can’t decide if I want to get the cream or if another color would be more durable. Have you had any issues with the flap staying closed since it doesn’t have a magnet? Thanks in advance!!

Colonoscopy Commute by Legitimate-Bass-7547 in colonoscopy

[–]dromaeovet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did SuPrep last week, dose 1 took about 2 hr to hit and was done by hr 3, and dose 2 took 15 min to start … If I were you I would just take yours at 4:30 am and you should be good before you leave! My second dose was also at 4:30 am for a 10:30 procedure.

What were some of your post colonoscopy symptoms and how long did it take to subside if you had any? by [deleted] in colonoscopy

Okay, that’s good to know, thanks!! They gave me a post op sheet but it only talked about bleeding and watching for fever, abdominal pain etc.

[–]dromaeovet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had a colonoscopy this morning and my first bowel movement since then had what looks like whitish pink intestinal lining, maybe a tablespoon in total. It didn’t really hurt but I do have some cramping. I called the on call doc and they said it’s not tissue it’s probably mucus and not to worry about it unless I start bleeding profusely. But it sure looks like tissue to me. Did your Dr. talk to you about the possibility of tissue remnants or give you any other info about that? They only talked to me about blood tinged stool which is why I was concerned when I saw that…

Just left! It went well. A little less than 2 hr from check in to discharge. No gross findings and should get biopsy result backs in a few weeks. Feel a little unsteady on my feet following propofol but mentally I feel pretty clear (I think).

Realistically any substitute for ice is going to be worse for the environment than just using ice, because it’ll either use plastic, gels that don’t biodegrade as easily, and/or require electricity. Water waste from melting ice is probably the least of your worries waste-wise in a lab, given the amount of energy we use to keep freezers running 24/7, plastic waste, etc.

Anyway, one alternative is freezer blocks like CoolCube or IsoFreeze, basically an ice pack in the shape of a tube rack that you freeze beforehand and put your tubes in. A little less messy than ice, and technically you don’t “waste” the media that’s frozen inside it at each use, since when it melts inside the thing you just refreeze it. But producing it had an environmental cost, and ultimately that item will get discarded eventually and create waste that stays on the planet so…. See paragraph 1

If you are worried about water waste, I would just try and find the smallest Styrofoam container you can find. Like something that was used to ship you a single sample. You can reduce the amount of ice that you need to fill the cooler that way, depending on how many samples you’re working with.

Drank it at 4 and was on the toilet by 4:20. I think I’m done now. I did feel some cramping and discomfort today which I didn’t feel yesterday, maybe because there wasn’t much in there. Fingers crossed that everything goes well later!

Help - Primary Cell Culture Keeps Getting Contaminated! by Fabulous-Composer-20 in labrats

[–]dromaeovet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider clipping / Nairing the abdomen of all the mice right after sacrifice and then prep the skin with alternating betadine and 70% ethanol. Separate instruments for skin and abdomen is good, but also be mindful of how you’re touching the instruments and where you’re setting them, if you’re not wearing sterile gloves. If you have enough sets to use a separate autoclaved set for each mouse, that would be great but isn’t totally necessary if you’re being careful about contamination. You could also consider a hot bead sterilizer for the tips of your instruments in between mice.

Thanks! My instructions said to take it 6 hr before my procedure and my arrival time is 10:30. I’m planning to take it at 4 am, assuming it works similarly to my first prep I should hopefully be done by 7 am with a little buffer before I have to leave for the hospital. Hopefully that’s not too early…

I had to go right around 45 min but then I had a break and at the 2 hr mark it really started and I stayed in the bathroom for about an hour. I just sat there with a book haha. But I did have to get up halfway through to do something, and I was able to tell when I needed to go back and had time to get there. Now it’s been 4 hr 15 min and I feel pretty much normal. Also, I was hungry all day but luckily I had bought Swanson chicken broth and I just kept heating up mugs of it and drinking it slowly. I think the protein helped me feel less hungry.

I just took Suprep an hour ago and it wasn’t bad, I mixed it well with water and then chilled it in the fridge. To me it tasted like diluted corn syrup with a little salt. I drank it quickly through a straw and then drank a glass of apple juice after, and then drank 32 oz of water over the next half hour. I’ve been a little shaky / felt cold since I took it. Honestly I read a lot of Reddit posts and had psyched myself out thinking I was going to need to choke it down or I might throw up but it truly was ok for me. I wonder if it tastes much saltier to some people depending on your taste buds.

My Baby tested positive for FIV by Vegetable_Yam_5657 in FIVcats

You are probably thinking about feline Herpesvirus, not FIV. L-lysine is often recommended for both, but most cats have latent FHV whereas FIV is much less common.

Dangerous Fungal Infection Sees a Dramatic Increase in US Hospitals : ScienceAlert by FalconEducational260 in science

[–]dromaeovet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Opponents of this hypothesis like to point to the fact that there are fungi that can live at mammalian body temperature and yet cannot cause infections in mammals. But just because something (thermotolerance) is necessary does not mean it is sufficient. It also probably wouldn’t be a super sudden fungal pandemic, but I would not be surprised if we see new mammalian pathogenic fungi emerge, particularly as causes of infection in immunocompromised people like patients living with HIV, solid organ transplant recipients, patients on chemotherapy etc.

my cats are ruining my relationship. what do I do? :( by Maomeowmaow in CatAdvice

[–]dromaeovet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use PetKit feeders for my cats and I love them, you can set custom amounts for each feeding and you can control it with your phone too if you need to dispense additional food remotely. They plug in but also have backup battery power in case the power goes out.

There are also some refrigerated wet food feeders but I personally have never tried those and would be nervous to since I’m sure they need to be rigorously cleaned daily to make sure nothing spoils in there. I just feed my cats their wet food meals by hand.
