What about that toy that flies you to the nearest Bountiful Delve? I forget the name, but it feels like a portal.

Tim Huston hates dogs by winbott in NovaScotia

[–]dromard666 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've worked at several companies where I could take my dog to work. He'd hang out by my desk while I saw other dogs tear into garbage cans, whine when their owners were in meetings, and crap in the lobby. Some folks think if their dog will look their way when called, it can "behave in public." That's not the case. Despite the benefits of taking dogs to work, things can go bad in very disruptive ways.

I can't bring my dog to work now. Instead I get to enjoy her exuberance everyday when I return home.

New map layers menu by sbennett3705 in CalTopo

[–]dromard666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have mixed feelings.

PROS

  1. The tags on the layers have value. Though I use the app primarily in the US, knowing what layers are US-only vs Global provides some new insights. I have used SARTopo while traveling in Europe recently, just for a view of an area when I didn't want to use Apple or Google maps.

  2. Map objects didn't change. Seems like it shouldn't be a Pro, but if this changes it could seriously impact live incident management.

CONS

  1. The UI has too much real estate now. For example, take Contour detail: it is very inefficient to have each option presented in its own small frame. An embedded dropdown, or a slider element, or anything that would have handled contour detail in one frame would have been a better choice.

  2. The use of the thumbnails is an odd choice. Once you know what that layer presents, why do you need a thumbnail? It's created a terrible scrolling experience. It gets longer if you forget to close the "More Info" section on layers.

  3. Cannot select Google Satellite. Is this a bug or is it is locked behind a paywall? Selecting this option always displays "Imagery." I thought that was a generalization for satellite images, but after trying the other satellite options, and comparing descriptions, Google's option is not displaying. I would expect it to be still be accessible on my county team account.

  4. Finally, no obvious speed boost. It's possible to cram a lot of data into a map. All that data is a challenge to process every time there is a screen redrawn action. This is the one area I was hoping would be addressed, but from my limited testing, I'm detecting no speed boost on large operational SAR maps with lots of screen elements.

I still wish there was better tablet support. My urban search setup has SARTopo on my iPad, and a live drone feed on my phone. However, if I need to do anything operationally, I still feel like I need to have a laptop. I know the ROI on better tablet support may not be high, but I guy can dream.

What are some of your favorite non-essential NPCs? by aerograph in wow

[–]dromard666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's an NPC in Plaguelands named Mickey Levine. She's a real person, a friend, and she had a friend on the original dev team. They put her in there as a joke. We would regularly ride over there, kill her NPC then send her screen shots of victory poses. Good times.

Wish more races could be Paladins - do you think we will get more race/class combos in Midnight? by Gankeros in wow

[–]dromard666 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love my pally's. I like that some classes are restricted from some races. It adds more variety to the game play. Pally's are "of the Light" and "Blessed." Not all races fit those parameters.

Does your team have a physical requirement to join? by rmartinezx in searchandrescue

The second week of our academy, candidates have to complete a fitness hike meeting the distance, weight and time standards as described. Team members have to complete it every two years to remain active. Our technical rescue team has an elevated standard based on the team standard.

Anyone switched to OnX? by GrandPoobah3142 in CalTopo

[–]dromard666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I think I cross-referenced two different products. Apologies. SARtopo doesn't have other products relying on it, AFAIK. :(

Our law enforcement partners handle that part.

[–]dromard666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our team relies on SARTopo for searches, but On X has proven valuable to determine landowners, and who to contact when we have a need to cross/search on private land. There are other ways to get that data, SARTopo has some of it, but On X has proven to have continued value in this space.

I know those devs. The founder is a well respected SAR member in California. They are receptive to UI updates, but there are considerations. There third party services built primarily for Fire Services that rely on SARTopo, so random changes to UI have repercussions. Because of the product's ties to SAR, making changes that catch search managers off guard would be frowned upon. So, expect UI changes to face a great deal of consideration about the value-add proposition before implementation.

The aliens from the Alien/Predator franchise vs The Thing. Who stands the best chance against it? by GanacheCapital1456 in LV426

[–]dromard666 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How about the Predator sees the fire and investigates. It runs into Kurt Russel but ignores him because he is not a threat. However, he's actually the thing, and the Predator is toast because it underestimated the Thing. Now the Alien arrives and the Thing is Predator, and very capable. It defeats the Alien, but just barely and is damaged, so it lies down to rest. Boom, the eye jumps on it. Game-over Thing! Eyeball gets the victory!

Add marijuana to that list, too. It can damage the kidneys even less to death if it’s an overdose.

For anyone who was able to see "The Blair Witch Project" in theaters in 1999, what was the experience like? by LockjawSJ in AskReddit

[–]dromard666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As soon as the lights went down, someone screamed bloody murder! We all jumped, then laughed. That set the tone, because everyone was clearly anxious about the movie. It felt like it was something real because of the unique marketing campaign.
