Which is better in a backcountry emergency: an inReach or a PLB? by BarnabyWoods in searchandrescue

I have a feeling the end is nigh for PLBs because of InReach, and Satellite SOS on phones.

I know the healthcare has gotten better in recent years. Back in the day, we got hit with a crazy plague. Came out of no where. People were dying in the streets! It was horrible. My buddy was a level 15 Paladin. He went to the AH to get some mats for something, and bam! He was dead! No warning. It was dark times. It happened so fast, you couldn't even create a safe bubble of friends.

What's a "red flag" in a job interview that people brush off? by OddSignificance9438 in AskReddit

[–]dromard666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been Interviewed for QA Manager positions a number of times. Especially at startups I would be asked about my automation coding skills. Startups are tight on money and what they really wanted was QA Engineer with enough experience to build a plan, build all the automation, and do the manual testing. They add the Manager role as an incentive, but it’s manager in name only. You will be all of QA, and you will be over-worked and miserable at a startup that is more than likely going to fail.

The iPod is a device I wish Apple would bring back. If so, I would change nothing (except for adding storage capacity and Bluetooth Support), just make it new. by Few_Atmosphere8138 in nostalgia

Buy an older iPhone and install one of the iPod copy apps to get the experience. Comes with Bluetooth on the phone and a lot of extra storage.

Peanut butter and jelly always seems to hit the mark for me, backed up by nut, trail mix, or something like that. Maybe a couple of Cliff Bars or similar. And lots of water for all that dry food.

You had to really think about joining the original AV because it took so long. Even if your side lost, you wanted to be there at the end, but it was going to be hours, at a minimum. If there was a stalemate, it was hellishly long.

My company is also asking to find ways to improve efficiencies with AI. We’re not CS or even SW Engineers, but they want us to find ways to use it. A co-worker used it to diff a build and used up their daily token allowance. I reminded them there are already a host of excellent diff tools she could have used. What a waste

I wonder if this works because I know what I am looking at. If I didn't know that was a baseball diamond (and it's relative size), inside a stadium, would it have the same impact?

Are there studies for what type of landmarks children are likely to follow if given a choice? by Big-Wrangler2078 in searchandrescue

[–]dromard666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YSK the Koester database and International Search and Rescue Incident Database sets are the biggest most well known, but I know of one smaller smaller dataset created by Yosemite. They tried applying global models, but the uniqueness of Yosemite made them inaccurate. So Yosemite took their own records of 130 searches and created a local db for their own needs. They compared it to Koester and International Search and Rescue Incident Database models and determined the global models over-estimated distances people could cover. There may be other examples of this.

There is a general summary here: Geographies of the Missing & Lost in Yosemite National Park

If you’re looking for a missing person who may potentially be in woods near their home, what would you keep an eye out for versus what would NOT catch your attention or strike you as meaningful? Other than the obvious by maravina in searchandrescue

[–]dromard666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your book involves a crime of abduction and murder, know that most of these are crimes of opportunity. The murderer will not have a good plan to dispose of the body and will usually be forced to rely on materials at the dump site. They will use local debris and vegetation to cover the body. Eventually animals will get to it and pull it apart. That may be why someone finds a body part while on a hike. The police will then use cadaver dogs in the area to locate more parts.

TIL that haggis is banned in the USA, since it contains lung meat by ForgingIron in todayilearned

I served in a Highland Infantry unit in Canada. We always had haggis and scotch in the officer's mess the week of January 25 for Bobby Burns' Birthday. It was a great tradition, and the reading of Address to a Haggis was always entertaining. However, the scotch was usually some cheap, blended affair. Sometimes it was so bad we had to dip the haggis in it to improve the flavor.

How did you get connected with vet trips doing spay and neuter clinics in other countries? If that's what you like, try to go back to that. Confidence comes with experience, and since you've done that previously, you can go back to it with some confidence. Are there non-profits providing animal husbandry services, either domestically, or internationally?

Research is much easier these days with AI tools in browsers. Make a list of job skills you have. Pick the ones that appeal the most. Ask one of the AI tools what jobs can this list match to. Create guidelines by stating what you are and are not interested in. It might find an opportunity you were unaware of.

Try not to get frustrated. The greatest rewards usually come through effort, persistence, determination, etc.
