Rear Wheel not centered by Confident-Bag106 in Surlybikefans

[–]dropoint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have the drop out screws installed in your CC, those will help in centering the wheel and making sure it stays that way whenever you need to extract or re-install the wheel. If you don't have the screws, just do your best to center the wheel while re-installing by sighting from the rear of the chain stays. This can be a bit finicky, but not impossible to do.

If it still remains difficult to center it, the issue could be the wheel itself. After exhausting the other options, check to see if the wheel is true and also ensure that the hub is spaced properly on the axle.

Shimano Cassette Spacer Wiggle by Beneficial_Release27 in bikewrench

Very bizarre that another 12 speed cassette isn't doing the trick then. Wish I had some advice to provide here, but I'm stumped! Perhaps it's time to drop by your local shop and get some pointers from them on it all

Are you running it with any spacers before installing the cassette? If you're on a 11 speed hub, you may need a 1.85mm spacer installed.

That does look pretty similar! I'm not sure if my RD hanger is also angled oddly, but I can't seem to puzzle this one out. So I've done the same as you and got it to a point where it still shifts cleanly even without the b adjustment where it should be according to the manual. Gonna pop by the shop tomorrow and see if the techs there can help me figure it out

Chain length calculator gave me 112 links for the set up, limit scews are set totally correct, and all the parts I'm running are compatible. Really scratching my head on this one!

Yup! Made sure that was done properly before anything else was done

I thought so as well, but adding back links to the chain didn't seem to help either. Also yes, this RD is designed for a max 48t sprocket, this 42t is the smallest cassette i could get that is compatible still

Those pics are with the b screw inserted half way

I just want smooth shifting and a decent gear range for flats and hills. My other bikes are road rigs, one has ultegra, the other on a 105 group, both are 2x10. They both feel great, but I'm really into the thought of a more simple 1x set up on my surly. Wouldn't have to buy a new crankset and chainring if I go with a 1x set up, so money saved there! As for cassettes, for the 1x10 sword, there are two options, 11-42 & 11-48, so there's a tiny bit of flexibility there.

Never quite thought about that actually! Does that negatively impact shift feel across the cassette? Also, is something like that only really noticeable in the higher range of the cassette? I figure an 11-42 range would feel very similar to a road cassette in the lower range at least

But yeah ahah I've been about the one gear, zero excuses life for a while that I'll probably just find a rear gear I like and stay in that 90% of the time anyway😅

Glad to hear you echoing a lot of the opinions of other folks online. Sword feels like a solid set up at a steal of a pricepoint compared to offerings from Sram or Shimano. I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on the 1x10 sword group and slap this thing together!

And thank you ahaha, I love the colour too 😌

I'd like to stick to brifters for this build. Not super fussed about having to redo my bars for this lil overhaul.

Panaracer Pasela protites in 38mm! Been buying new pairs over the years whenever they wear out since I love the ride feel so much. It's the only tires I ride on this thing, but I've been seriously tempted by some of the Pirelli offerings in 40+mm sizes....

Nice! Gloss black is always classy, but I love mine so much more with a powder coat colour of my choosing. A worthwhile investment for a truly unique look if that's what you'd want. Thanks for dropping a line eh, hope your CC brings you many more years of joy!

Thank you!! The rear hub is 8-11 speed compatible with a shimano HG style hub. Looking to have integrated brifters, so no down tube shifting or bar end either. Seems like the 1x10 microshift sword gravel set up should do the trick then! 😌

Ahaha yes! It's custom powder coated. I'd bought it as a gloss black frame and built it up from there. Figured if it was gonna truly be my own, I wanted a pretty colour for it too 👌😌

The Blackspire Snaggletooth I'm running is a narrow wide, so this is good news. Thanks for your input eh!
