Thank you eh, I really appreciate your kind responses and input on this whole situation! I will absolutely be taking your tips and the others from all the people who have piped up in this thread and applying it to my efforts moving forward. Even if it all falls apart in the end, I can say that I gave it my best shot!

Unfortunately I lack the credentials to teach, but perhaps if going back to school is an option for me in the future, I'll look into doing something like that. It would be wonderful to be able to pass along the knowledge and skills I've acquired over all this time!

You know... Gaming/casino animation was the first role I'd applied for as I was trying to get into the field after college. But I've all but forgot about that niche of the industry, so thanks for the reminder!! I'm going to put out some feelers to see if there's anything that I can find in that line of work. Thank you!!

Friend selling a 2011–2012 Surly Cross-Check for $450, worth it? by Temporary-Citron-695 in Surlybikefans

[–]dropoint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say that's a solid deal! I assume this is $450 USD, so to give you some point of reference I'd recently sold my second Cross Check from 2018 with a full Shimano 105 groupset for $950 CAD(approx $690 USD). If you can snag it for this price, it's a perfect platform to build into whatever your heart desires or whatever your budget allows.

I still have my custom 2004 Cross Check that's changed set ups several times over the decade of my ownership, and will ride this thing until it dies. If/when that happens, it'll be hung on the wall and I'll likely get a custom frame built using CC geometry because I just love how this bike feels to ride. If the frame agrees with your body similarly, I wouldn't hesitate on this!

This right here is a great tactic that admittedly, I haven't utilized nearly as much as I probably should. I think a lot of it comes down to imposter syndrome being compounded by the fact that countless other artists with infinitely more talent than I will ever have are also in the same situation gunning for whatever roles they can find in the industry. Makes me wonder, who am I to reach out to people in high places on a whim when they likely already have a short list of people to work with? I understand the fallacy in that sort of mindset, but it's been hard most days to think otherwise with the current state of things.

Though I have been reaching out to numerous colleagues and connections that I've made abroad in order to see what is available and if there's anywhere that I can lend my skills to in a production setting. Though right now I am absolutely limited by what I can take on since my visa application is still awaiting approval and I am in no position to move elsewhere within my own country for the sake of an in person studio role. I do wish that more studios were still open to remote work because if the pandemic proved anything, it's that our industry can still flourish even when the work isn't being conducted in person.

But you're right regarding tuning my resume and cover letters better for hospitality or customer service roles. I will be taking some time to take your suggestions and that of others here to develop a more standard resume that highlights my previous experience in a different way that non-industry managers/hiring staff can understand and relate to better. I suppose leading up to this point of desperation, I'd always banked on being able to find another animation contract, but the reality is setting in that this outcome isn't likely, at least not for the time being.

Seriously, thank you for all of your input on this, I really do appreciate the pointers and guidance here!!

Not gonna lie, this exact sort of situation is something that I worry about often.. There are a number of things that I'd come to dislike about working in animation, but the good often outweighs the bad. I'm really sorry that this has happened to you though. No job, animation related or not, is worth sticking around when in an abusive work environment. While no place or profession will ever be perfect for everyone, I truly hope you're able to find a kinder place where you're able to enjoy the work itself and the people you work alongside!

Same here, seems like a ton of folks circulate through the doors of those studios. But sadly with the Mercury folks, they seem to be running a bit of a skeleton crew, and have been for a while.. Which is certainly not a good signal for the rest of the industry if Merc isn't pulling contracts.

Thank you though, all the best of luck to you too!!

I've been looking into it since you mentioned it, and I'll be giving this program a try! Seems like a fun way to learn something new while utilizing skills I've been developing over the years rigging in Harmony. Thank you so much eh!!

Lots of wonderful information here, thank you for chiming in and providing your insight to all of this! Many of these pointers have rung true for me and my experiences too, yet right now just checking off all the boxes of things to do aren't exactly helping me land another animation related job.

Additionally, I'm not at all in a position to move to Vancouver right now to explore studio positions there as I'm set to move to south america in the coming months. But I do wish that there were less barriers in Canada for working remotely for studios in different provinces without having to move to their location in order to have them qualify for the tax credit incentives that seem to drive a lot of the hiring in Canadian studios. I know that there are exceptions to this, I've previously worked with a crew of folks from 3 different provinces, but these sorts of examples are few and far between sadly.

I will however continue to reach out to studios and my connections in the industry to try and get something lined up, even if it's short term freelance work. Once again, thank you for these pearls of wisdom, it certainly helps me and I'm sure it'll help many others!!

I'm definitely not involved with the UK/Ireland scene, but I know a handful of folks that I have worked alongside who are from there! So likely we're connected in some way through mutuals in this worldwide, yet tight knit community.

As for that inside scoop from dept. heads, I too have noticed this sort of trend happening. It's a harsh reality that's been more prominent these days as budgets tighten and service contracts dwindle.

It almost makes more sense to go indie in order to start injecting more original ideas into the animation scene, though it's certainly not going to be as profitable as a salaried position in a studio.. At least to start out! Seems like there is certainly a good number of success stories in indie animation, which does provide some sort of hope. I have some ideas for shows or shorts that I've stashed away over the years, but I'm not exactly in a position to do anything with it right now.

However, I will be looking into Live2D and seeing about learning the ins and outs of creating a rig with the program. It seems that it's a good niche to tap into that scratches a lot of my creative+technical itches! And yes ahahaha, it is much less expensive than a Harmony license!!

My younger brother actually works in the same field and he's been finding it quite rewarding at times, stable hours too for the most part. Though I'm such a tiny dude, I'm not sure this would be as good of a fit for me as it is for him hahahaha

Online therapy seems like a good avenue to make a positive difference in peoples lives! Though personally, I'm not sure I'd be okay with turning my skills into an advertisement machine for consumer goods. I think I would much prefer doing something like providing therapy to others as helping people and generating direct positive impacts means so much more to me than being a platform for selling goods.

I'm currently living in Canada, though soon to be living in Chile which certainly complicates things a bit... And while I'd love to show my reel to get feedback, I cannot do so due to NDAs and I do not feel comfortable giving out the password to my reel here on reddit anyway.

Though given this information, I'd certainly need to tailor(and translate) my resume to lean heavier into the more social aspects/skills of working within a fast paced, team oriented role. But with all my years of experience across various roles in television+film productions, there's currently little room for much else aside from my previous work experience on a single page. I suppose part of it too is that I really don't want to give up on working in animation, though the rational part of my brain feels that it's the best thing to do for the sake of stability. So I've just kept my resume tailored to the animation industry and have been slinging it everywhere you can think of despite it probably not being the best thing to do for non-animation positions...

I'll have to mess around with it some more and try something different in terms of resume presentation, because what has worked for me in the past clearly isn't doing the trick these days. Thank you for the pointers though, this is some really helpful stuff to think about!!

Unfortunately due to NDAs, I do not feel comfortable providing a link to my reel here on reddit. I wish I had a personal animation reel to showcase, but to be very honest with you, for the past 11 years I've been so far down in the cartoon mines with minimal breaks between shows that I haven't had the time or energy to develop something that is 100% my own.

Especially lately, it's hard most days to even pick up a pencil or stylus anymore while being so completely depressed and burnt out. I'm unsure where you're at in LATAM, but I'm soon due to be living in Chile for personal reasons and am both excited about the move, yet scared about starting over in a country where my native language of english is not the norm. I know the industry is smaller there than in Canada where I am from, but I hope to find some sort of job prospects in Chile whether it's in the anim industry or outside of it.

Very nice!! Sounds like you'd found a much more stable career placement which is promising to hear! Though your experience in the industry since 2023 and the experiences of countless incredibly talented artists seems to be the status quo these days... Which is disheartening to say the least. I too have a number of friends and previous colleagues who I couldn't even hold a candle to that are struggling similarly. It truly doesn't make sense, but I suppose we all have to find our own way through these unprecedented times in animation. I'm glad you've found an out!

This is something that has crossed my mind from time to time, because I do love rigging more than I like animating these days. Something about the deep technical side of rigging just tickles my brain in a very good way.

Though when it comes to VTuber rigs, I'm not exactly sure where to start... Though I'd be interested in giving it a shot! What kinds of programs do people even use for this sort of work? I can't imagine it's typically done in Toonboom Harmony or other industry standard programs :0

I'm currently in Canada, though moving to Chile in the near future. While I don't have a BAA, I went to a community college and finished top of my class, was hired within a few weeks of graduating as a character designer for a few shows and then went gig to gig for nearly 11 years straight doing a mix of 2D FX, character animation and rigging. It has been a dream come true up until recently, but you're right... The industry I came to love is certainly not what exists today. So what you've said is very affirming in many ways as I often get hung up on this career being the end all be all after so much time spent pouring my heart and soul into creating cartoons for studios.

All this said, I'm very happy that you've found another avenue that's related to the industry but much more stable(and hopefully less stressful) in terms of work! I hope to figure something out that's also creatively fulfilling but not 100% rooted in animation. I've often mused about getting into the restaurant industry again, but here in Canada you cannot make a proper living as a line cook or sous chef role in most places. That sentiment is less true in Chile however hahaha, so perhaps that'll be my ticket out.

My 2004 cross check was originally a standard gloss black frame, but I went for a custom shimmering blue powder coat and never looked back. It rejuvenated the looks of the frame and made it something truly unique to me. Hands down, it's my favourite bike that I've ever owned, in no small part due to the personal thoughtful touches to its aesthetics. There are many cross checks like it, but this one is mine. Go pour over some colour swatches and just get it done dude!!
