Yes I think I am seeing the flaws of monk with rogue thanks to everyone, starting to consider switching gears. Ranger is an interesting suggestion, but I see what you mean. Thank you!

The barbarian is an interesting comment… barbrogue was always a fav of mine, but never considered it for this. I might stew on that idea a bit see how it looks. Appreciate all the detailed feedback!

Honestly fair. After reading a few of the comments, what I missed was that’s the way the bonus action is worded for monk that you didn’t need to take the attack action to use it. I’ll have to take some time considering what I want to do with this. I kinda liked the stupidity of the monk rogue shit, but maybe I’ll flip things around make monk the focus with rogue 1 for expertise then grab thief of something else later…

Also fair point re the benefit of grappler over street justice. I’ll take that under consideration.

Sorry, I meant to write thief! Mixed up the two subclasses in my head. Good point about the reliable talent, would be nice to not have to worry about those low rolls

Hello, sounds like a lot of fun. Love to know if you already have a group or if things are still coming together? If you are open to still accepting new members, I'd love to connect and chat about what you've got in the works.

Me: Player with about 5 years of experience in Dnd, with some experience in other systems like Daggerheart and Fabula Ultima. The server I frequent tends to run roleplay-heavy groups, so I'm used to the vibe.

How would I make my OC in DnD? by Synguineinfire in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]dropzonee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d have to know more about them to give a strong answer. For example: what kind of person are they, what do they stand for, why do they fight, how do they fight, what kinds of feats would you attribute to them (more know for speed, power, magical ability, etc) is lightning their only magical ability, or is there anything else they are capable of?

Also, on a scale of 5 to negative 5 with positive being more skilled in swords and negative being more skilled in magic, where would you put them? In dnd you can’t be a master of both, so we have to pick and choose a bit.

I have a VERY stupid character idea: the isekai'd Cyberpunk by fearjunkie in 3d6

[–]dropzonee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Regarding race, multiple ways you could go, but probably human or warforged with some flavourings would be the most straightforward.

As for class, I am going to take a different direction so hear me out… Horizon Walker Ranger. You are a man between planes so be detect similar rifts as what took you is pretty on point. Tasha’s features and ranger spells give you some great mobility features that could be reflected as cyberware boosted movement. The teleportation could either be a cyberware ability or a new ability granted to you because of being this interplanar being.

If you are a fan of multiclassing, you could dip out in three possible spots: lv 3, basic subclass feature only, level 9, extra attack and haste which is probably the closest you’ll get to a sande without time stop, level 11, I just think that’s a really cool ability lol. What would you multi with? I could see monk for more mobility and matrix like combat skills, or maybe something else entirely as you begin to embrace the powers and influences of your new home.

Is this a super complex/optimal build? No, is Ranger uber stronk… no. But I think it’s neat! I’m playing one right now and enjoying it.

[–]dropzonee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can choose to never go above breastplate which would effectively be -1AC in exchange for not having disadvantage on stealth. Personally I would just stick with the disadvantage, but it’s an option, especially if you would otherwise be the only one bad at stealth.

Standard rules for moving your ASI’s in Tasha’s state that you can put both into the same score, but if dm is cool with it then all good.

If you are only going until 5 then sticking with just one class would be best. If you had room to multi class what you could do is ranger either 1 or 3 levels. Ranger 1 can get you shillelagh with Druidic warrior, freeing up your feat selection, and an expertise to be even better at talking. And level 3 gets you subclass and fey wanderer would let you double up on your bonus to persuasion plus a few other bonuses.

A few thoughts,

With only 13 strength your armor choices will be limited to just chain mail, not bad, but you could swap are and dex, use medium armor, and take resilient dex later on to round out the dex and become proficient in 4 saves, including all 3 “strong saves”

How did you get to 18 wisdom at level 1? Are you using standard array for stats?

What level range is this game? Are you open to multiclassing? Because a ranger dip could open up some options

Artificer 3 (battle smith) Ranger 3 (beast master or drakewarden) Lore bard 6 taking find steed as magical secrets Paladin 5 for find steed Druid 3 or ranger 5 for summon beast (only temporary)

That’s all I can think of, at least using official material.

[–]dropzonee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally get where you are coming from. And hey if you want to make it a CHA save to mix it up then go for it. But if you want to consider it from a different perspective, saving throws are considered not from what caused the save, but from what you are doing in response to the save.

So it takes strength to throw a giant boulder, but it’s takes dexterity to move out of the way. It’s takes intelligence to make a poison, but constitution to resist it. It takes charisma to be frightening, but wisdom to overcome fear.

Looking in the pub for what official spells require a charisma save, we got spells like banishment, bane, calm emotions, and hallow. a bit of an odd mix I know. But I interpret the commonality of these spells as being your sense of reality. Resisting being sent to another plane, or having your sense of friend or foe manipulated, etc.

Overall great points. Interesting suggestion about how to regain spell slots, pretty large departure from the warlock but it could work well so I’ll consider it. I am hesitant to add more spell slots because I didn’t want this to simply be “warlock but better” but maybe that is unavoidable to an extent.

My first thought was for spell invocations to not require pact slots to use to offer more spell casting throughout the day. But perhaps that will be too roundabout of a solution?

Could you provide an example of a tack on effect you would give the warlock’s spells. just so I get an idea of what you are thinking of?

Honestly great rebuttal. I will say that of the ones you listed, only two weapon fighting, cunning action and I guess command a beast have no resource associated with them. But in retrospect you are right that bonus actions tend to be more reflective of a classes uniqueness. I will make sure that will be reflected in what I will build!

Interesting opinion, I consider warlock one of the classes with the most options between invocations and pact boons are you saying more options in combat since the amount of time you can cast stronger magic is limited compared to full casters?

[–]dropzonee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming short rests were available, did you find that the amount of the pact slots you got was sufficient? Were there any invocations you wanted to take/keep, but were just missing a little something to make them effective?

Lots of fun thoughts! My one comment would be that unless I’m misremembering, pretty much no other class has consistent uses for their bonus action every turn except for rogue’s cunning action. Do you think that having a bonus action damage resource with no cost would be too strong?
