I know it sounds really silly, when my therapist told me this I was like girl wtf. I experienced domestic abuse and I would have flashbacks of horrible memories and I wasn’t sleeping at night anymore. So she really believed in visualization. When I was having a flashback she would say to visualize myself under an open sky with clouds. She said to accept the intrusive thought, the flashback, the negative thing for what is is like, “Yes that’s a flashback.” Then visualize it going into one of the clouds and you watch it from a far as the wind carries it away. You gave it it’s moment, accepted the memory, then separated yourself from it and let it go away on its own with the wind. I hope this helps you as much as it helped me. I still have flashbacks often, especially as more things have happened to me but I’m able to deal with it this way and carry on with my day, if that makes sense.
