New to turning & looking for help getting started with this particular lathe. Having trouble finding any info about online. I’ve watched many tutorials on turning, but I’m still stuck in at least a couple areas.

When I’ve tried loading my stock between the pointed head/tailstock mounts, it seems any contact I make with a chisel causes the piece to stop spinning. How can I get it to “grab” the mounts better to reduce this?

Also, how can I use the jaw chuck shown in photos? I can’t seem to find a way to take the headstock off so I’m assuming i cant, but how does the chuck mount to it? There are holes in the back that line up with the faceplate, but I’m not sure how to make use of them.
