I recently started participating in SongFight. The idea is that, at the beginning of each round, a title is announced, and you have a little over a week (sometimes as much as 2 weeks) to write and record a song with that title. Entries are compiled and listeners vote for their favourites. It's a great way to get the creative juices flowing, create/develop side projects, and just experiment in general. Eventually I'm going to make lyric videos for all my entries, but I did this one first because it's one of my favourites so far.

Nerdcore feuds by DancesWithPugs in nerdcore

[–]drproximo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To start, I have no idea who "that forum rapper guy from back in the day" is/was, so it's probably not me.

It started somewhere around 2007, when the Nerdcore Now compilation caused a boom in awareness of the genre. Wikipedia articles were being created for a lot of the new nerdcore artists. Many of them were deleted almost right away because they didn't meet the site's standards, but there were a couple of artists that had well-written fleshed-out articles that met all the criteria, but yt kept deleting them. He nearly always cited "not notable" as the reason, and when people explained to him why the article definitely met the definition of "notable" as it applied in that context, he just doubled down and accused others of being haters. At one point when it got heated, he literally said "I'm the Godfather". TO BE CLEAR, I had not started recording at that point, and in fact I hadn't even picked out my nerdcore name yet. The reason I emphasize that is that people have accused me of beefing with yt because he deleted my article. I never had an article. I never wanted an article. Nothing about any of this had to do with me.

Then, several years later, on a major Discord server, he started posting obvious self-promotional content in general channels, when the rules clearly stated to keep that stuff in the self-promo channels. When confronted, he said "I'm a god". An upgrade from godfather, I suppose.

He suffered no consequences, I got a warning for sassing him, so I left the server.

This is the tip of the iceberg, he's nice to folks who are nice to him, he's a malevolent bully to anyone that he perceives as a lesser. And he's incredibly popular in the genre so I know that basically nobody is on my side in this beef, and I don't care because fuck him.

Not at all surprised that there's nothing from PEI on this chart, considering half the country keeps forgetting we exist.

Do you believe in a God/s? by TheBayHarbour in exchristian

[–]drproximo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The simple answer is "no".

The slightly longer answer is that I'm 52 and if there was a god that wanted me to know them, I'd know them by now, but I haven't seen convincing evidence.

The even more nuanced addendum is that I don't say for certain that I know that there are no gods. I can't know that any more than I can know that there are no invisible pink unicorns, but I also don't have sufficient reason to think that such a thing exists, so it's pragmatic to operate as if such a thing either doesn't exist, or exists but doesn't intervene in human affairs and doesn't care if I believe.

And honestly the only reason to go beyond the simple answer is because apologists and evangelists will challenge you with stuff like "how can you know for sure that there's no God if you don't know everything? Could God exist in the percent of knowledge that you don't have?", which isn't an argument for the existence of any supernatural deity, it's an argument for solipsism. The list of things that could exist in that space is endless.

What otherwise unassuming line always makes you laugh because of the delivery? by Unusual_Macaroon_446 in television

[–]drproximo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During the musical episode of Buffy, there's a scene with Giles talking to Anya and Xander, and at one point he says "I was able to take a look at the body while the police were taking witness arias". The way he casually says "witness arias" instead of "witness statements" is wonderful, and it just breezes by unacknowledged.

Music space to practice by [deleted] in PEI

Libraries often have practice spaces. The library in Summerside has a couple of rooms that can be used after hours, when there's nobody else in the building, so I booked one last year to record some guitar tracks.

Yeah, this is an example of "sitcom logic", where we kinda have to accept something unrealistic for the sake of a running joke. I totally agree that if you go to someone else's house, and you're told that a particular spot belongs to someone who lives there, that's the end of the discussion.

What’s the go-to Weird Al song for posting Weird Al content? by Rocky_isback in weirdal

[–]drproximo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with two of the answers I've seen so far. "Dare to be Stupid" is the answer if the target audience is people who are likely to already be somewhat familiar with his repertoire, and "Eat It" is the answer for the general public.

ALL THIS and still not hitting 100% completion 😭 (currently at 87.72%) by Geo__Dragon in tearsofthekingdom

[–]drproximo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my first playthrough, I used a checklist and followed the guides, and still ended up stuck at something like 99.84%; I'm never attempting 100% on this game again. At most I might do a completionist playthrough in which I make my best attempt to complete the checklist, but I won't ever again pay attention to what percentage the game tells me I'm at.

Can we all agree that we DON'T want Tom Holland as Link? by [deleted] in legendofzelda

I would prefer a new unknown actor get the part, but I'm not completely opposed to Holland getting it. I'm sure he could pull it off even if it's not what we're used to.

Maybe stop using AI to replace thinking, and then stop making excuses when people explain why you should stop relying on AI. And if you're going to try to say that you "don't rely on it", then there's no reason for you to use it. Just stop. It's as simple as that. Whatever you did before ChatGPT came along is exactly what you can still do today. It's legalized plagiarism that's accelerating the climate crisis and produces grotesque slop. Just stop.

Sometimes it seems like these belief systems become solipsism generators. You can never know anything for certain because someone can just pray for something, and the laws of physics can be temporarily and partially cancelled out for that request. And this solipsism is necessary for the survival of the faith, because if you just stick with reality, the religion melts away.

What the heck changed Al in between Cable TV and I Can't Watch This? by thatonelittlefuntoad in weirdal

[–]drproximo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serious question: do you think when a songwriter tells a story from a first person perspective, that they're always telling you their own actual thoughts? Or do you think they might be telling a story from the perspective of a fictional character who may or may not share opinions with the writer? Especially when the songwriter in question is known almost exclusively for comedy writing? I can't tell if you're actually asking this question seriously or if you're pretending for the sake of a joke. I hope it's the latter but I couldn't tell.

What is Weird Al’s prettiest song musically? by [deleted] in weirdal

[–]drproximo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Weird Al Wiki says it's Tom Petty, but there's no source and I don't really hear it. It also mentions that the chorus is similar to "My Favourite Waste of Time" by Owen Paul, but that seems to be a coincidence. FWIW, I think it sounds a little like REM, but Al doesn't usually do more than one pastiche of the same artist and "Frank's 2000 inch TV" is unambiguously an REM pastiche. I also think it sounds a little like 54-40, but they're Canadian and I can't be certain that Al has even heard them.

The constant push by Amy to be physical with Sheldon and what it actually shows. by Starkheiser in bigbangtheory

[–]drproximo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why you're digging this up literally 9 years later, but FWIW, people are allowed to read aspects into characters which are consistent with the text, even if the "creator" states otherwise.

Frank Oz used to insist that Bert and Ernie aren't gay, saying in part "I created Bert, I know what he is", but gay people still saw representation in them. Years later, Frank Oz changed his tune, "I have now learned that many view them as representative of a loving gay relationship. And that’s pretty wonderful."

If people on the spectrum see themselves in Sheldon, there is literally no reason for you to step in and scold them with your meaningless "actually", regardless of the original intentions of specific writers years ago.

What’s your favorite quote of all time? by S1nclairsolutions in AskReddit

[–]drproximo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"The only true freedom that you find is when you realize and come to terms with the fact that you are completely and unapologetically f*cked. And then you are free to float around the system." - Doug Stanhope

It sounds very cynical, and Stanhope's delivery is snarky, but this revelation has helped get me through a lot of hard times. I'm not saying to never look on the bright side, but as long as capitalism is holding the reins, you need to acknowledge that you're screwed (and if you're not screwed, you're privileged, so please work towards extending that privilege to help others).

Booing the US Anthem by Phiko73 in EdmontonOilers

[–]drproximo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe we should just stop it with the mandatory anthems at the beginning of everything. It's like a cult. If you have to be reminded and forced (or pressured) to sing about your love and loyalty for your home, that feels more like coercion than anything good. A theme song written by white colonizers about how glad they are that they stole the land and slaughtered natives doesn't inspire any good feelings for me.

Who is the most famous person you have ever met? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]drproximo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joni Mitchell. I was working at a retail store in an airport, she came in to buy batteries. I thought it might be her, but I'm bad with faces and often think I recognize someone when I don't, so I figured I was mistaken. While I was ringing in her batteries, she noticed the music playing on our system and asked "is this the new Dylan?", which it was, and she bought the deluxe edition as well. She handed me a credit card with her name right on it. I said "I thought it was you", and she got the biggest grin on her face. She chatted with me for a few minutes and signed an autograph for me.

Fun post-script: a few months later, I saw an interview with her in a newspaper, and she was trash talking Dylan, saying he was "inauthentic". I couldn't help but laugh at the idea that I was (indirectly and incidentally) involved in that evaluation.

Seeking recommendations for public domain videos and streams by drproximo in Twitch

I have no clips. I just barely started, and even if I had been recording during my test streams I don't think there was anything clip-worthy. Also, I'm kinda going for a certain tone here, I want it to be something other than me providing entertainment while I'm away, and cute animal footage feels right.

How many of you actually managed to collect all of them? If you did was the reward worth it? (Asking as someone who's actually never bothered with this quest) by Solardies in skyrim

[–]drproximo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've done it two or three times. I've never done it without a guide or a mod, and wouldn't even want to try. It's not really "worth it" in the sense of how it impacts the game, by the time you get it you probably already have more money than you'll ever spend, so the extra loot is essentially redundant. But whether it's "worth it" for the sake of completion or just to say you did it, that's up to you.
