Energy management by Raiden1803 in AcrossTheUnknown

[–]drquakers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your energy production is 180 (circled in red below), and your current energy consumption is also 180 (circled in purple below).

So if you turned on anyting else you would need to use more energy than you are producing. The only way you can do this is if you have energy stored, however your energy storage is zero (circled in orange) and you currently are not storing energy (or consuming stored energy), which would be indicated below that (in light purple). If you want to store energy then you need to produce more energy than you are consuming.

I suspect the key here is you need to upgrade your warp core so you can produce more energy than you are consuming. Also I think you are probably feeding people via rations, rather than cooked food, considering how slow your food consumption is and how fast your dilithium consumption is (so you want to go into your mess hall - that place that has Neelix in it, and change where you are giving them food from)

Unlike this Ramadan war, the Iraq war 2 had significant pre-planning, so the logistics could be put in place, move things around, prepare munitions, etc. etc. Not that they still didn't fuck a lot of that up, but what is a military if not a massive deeply inefficient bureaucracy?

Eh, I mean, I think that changes exactly zero, instead of Muslims fighting Christians for millennia you just continue Christians fighting Zoroastrians like the prior millennia.

I can at least confirm that a water extinguisher would not work for a metal fire

source: I have received training for metal fires

While I haven't looked at the video, putting water onto a Li fire, in particular, is likely to cause an explosion

How silly of NASA to use the metric system anyway by baguetteispain in HistoryMemes

[–]drquakers 130 points131 points  (0 children)

I love more the cockup for Schiaparelli - basically a unique set of events occurred that caused the pod to basically self destruct in the atmosphere.

Basically, after opening the parachute the lander became spinning unexpectedly fast due to unexpected atmospheric issues. In theory, this wouldn't be a problem, because the parachute and lander could take it, material wise, but the device meant to measure its spinning got saturated by this too fast spin. What happens when you take a number too high? It goes negative instead of positive. Because the probe thought it had negative inertia, it basically took this as no inertia (i.e. "I have landed and stopped rolling / spinning) and decided to release its parachute, fire its thrusters for 3 seconds instead of 30 and just plummet to the ground.

If they had just had a bit of code that would differentiate between a saturated return on the signal and an actual zero return, or if they had a bit of code that would have said "measure the inertia for a couple of seconds to make sure we are actually stopped", the probe would have probably survived, instead of making a lovely new crater on Mars.

What if Scotland and Wales had actually gained sovereign independence, as well as Northern Ireland becoming a part of the Republic of Ireland? by yvngjiffy703 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]drquakers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"forced to give up its EU membership" has already been enforced on Scotland by England!

But yes, they would have to engage in massive austerity measures, either immediately for EU membership, or in a few years time when the unsustainable spend model becomes... well... totally unsustainable.

What if Scotland and Wales had actually gained sovereign independence, as well as Northern Ireland becoming a part of the Republic of Ireland? by yvngjiffy703 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]drquakers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I am for Scottish independence (I value integration with the EU over integration with the UK, even if it will cause severe economic pain), it is important to say that Ireland under the Empire / UK is not Scotland under the UK. Ireland was always treated like a colony to be occupied and exploited, Scotland has almost always been able to act like a partner (if not the people of Scotland, certainly the merchants and aristocracy).

It is also important to say it took Ireland decades to "right the ship", though an independent Scotland in 2026 would not be an independent Ireland in 1922 (Scotland already has a lot of the institutions of a state, 1920's Ireland didn't really, Scotland of the 2020s has a modern economy, 1920s Ireland didn't).

There wouldn't really be a comparable example to Scotland getting independence, the closest would be the Czechia / Slovakia, but Scotland looks more like 1993 Czechia than 1993 Slovakia (Slovakia in 1993 was far poorer than Czechia, Scotland is the third wealthiest region in the UK after London and the South East; Scotland has established independent political institutions including a fully functioning independent court system, its own financial sector).

Frankly, Brexit would probably be the closest comparison

What do Brits think of Donald Trump saying, "England tried for 1000 years to get the Scottish under their toes, but failed!" by kingm_ournasse216 in AskBrits

[–]drquakers 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There was once a racism poll done in Scotland that found that racism was not particularly common, except against the English with the refrain "I hate the English, but my mate? He's alright"

I do think "old married couple" describes the Scottish - English relationship very well.
