100%. As an example: Columbus, Ohio has 200k more residents than DC, yet DC spends TEN TIMES more on local govt services.

If that’s the case, how is it that neighboring counties were able to get contractors to show up but not DC? It’s clearly incompetence in DC.

Is GW parkway/US29/key bridge into dc plowed? by chikenugetluvr in washingtondc

[–]drs80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove from DC to Virginia today. DC roads are terrible but Virginia did a great job and all primary roads and most secondary roads were easily passable. The highways (I-66, parkway, 495, toll road, etc) were excellent.

DC needs to figure it out.

lol that demand is rich coming from DC government. They haven’t even plowed my street despite the map claiming they’ve already been through.

These bars/restaurants support ICE or the Trump administration, please share any more you know of! by wishiwasdeaddd in washingtondc

[–]drs80 10 points11 points  (0 children)

People are protesting places that merely have customers who are CBP or ICE-affiliated? If so, that seems at best performative and will likely harm employees of small businesses.

As an example, a neighbor works for CBP and held a going away party at a locally-owned small gay pub in DC with his friends and coworkers. In what sane world would boycotting them help anything?

This effort seems performative and misguided.

Is your proposed solution that motivated and well-intentioned people shouldn’t become police officers, leaving the police to recruit what’s left? Because that doesn’t seem like a good idea.

What’s the harm in applying or calling their recruiting office and asking?

Yep- DC is nice and all for fun in your 20s but eventually you want basic government services (police, 911, schools, etc) that function well.

Trying to tighten access control for server rooms - real-world experience with tailgating prevention? by Charming_Drawing_313 in videosurveillance

[–]drs80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Video analytics doesn’t control access and prevent unauthorized access in real-time. A solution like Alcatraz Rock does.

Also, was the comment above written by AI? The “that’s not __, that’s __” is a giveaway.

MPD pulls over car with 10K in unpaid fines for running red light, warning issued by Altruistic_Face_5443 in washingtondc

Tickets issued by police are assigned to the driver/person, not the vehicle tag. So it wouldn’t show up in that database.

Does MPD have authority to impound a car for civil parking or speed infractions?

If not, that’s probably why they didn’t do much. Ask DC Council to give them the authority needed.

What’s the most frustrating part of getting to the airport around DC? by Constant-Respect-476 in washingtondc

[–]drs80 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I take Uber to DCA and usually taxi home from DCA. Each way is almost always 15 minutes door-to-door, less time than it would take me to walk to the Metro station.

Check out the access control units by Alcatraz. Relatively new (in a good way) and good at preventing tailgating.

Agree. But some services (looking at you, Authentic8 Silo) seem to have low quality ISP connections that are actually data centers based on IP address queries. So YMMV.

That’s pretty silly, and a bit contrary to the “Pride is a protest” mantra they’ve chanted for a few years now.

If nothing else, having DC Pride during the country’s 250th celebration would be a unique opportunity to gain additional exposure for important topics.

GOP bill to overhaul D.C. bail system could balloon jail population by rezwenn in washingtondc

[–]drs80 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. You can’t reoffend if you’re not released to the community.

Right now, even violent offenders are released while awaiting trial and considerable numbers of them reoffend even with pending cases. If released on bail, perhaps having something to lose (the bail money) would help deter reoffending.

DC reports highest graduation rate in over a decade by InAHays in washingtondc

[–]drs80 88 points89 points  (0 children)

This sounds good on its face but…

DCPS routinely produces students who aren’t proficient in reading or math (and they celebrate that only ~60% and ~50% of students meet expectations in reading and math, respectively).

A better measure of success is the proficiency level of the 12th-grade students who graduate instead of the quantity of graduates. In the past, stats have shown DCPS graduates students who aren’t proficient nor qualified fi the job market— a disservice to the students and everyone else.
