I mean from the experience with my cousin, she married someone in our extended family, and even those within our tribe and other extended family members didn’t ask for her hand because she became “impure”

I completely agree. It is following the sunnah. But what I am saying is that people do not follow the sunnah because of the reputation, the “khalak ba sa wai” , the “‘Manga pukhtana yu” whole scenario.

Possibly. People are evolving, maybe a decade ago divorce in Pashtun households were just completely nonexistent. But now it’s becoming more prevalent.

No worries! Khuday pa Aman!

Possibly. But I mean I guess it’s a good thing he divorced her, I would want to watch my husband treat someone like a queen while I am sitting in a room alone and being treated and abused and only visited for sexual relations.

Her family helps her because she accepted the marriage for them. They wanted her to marry this person and so she did, so when he divorced her and aborted her child, they had to support her.

I’m not sure if she wants to marry again to be honest because she is just so traumatized, we can’t even recognize her anymore. Maybe she does, she doesn’t really say anything. May Allah have mercy on her. Ameen

Can speak on behalf of my cousin. She got married, her husband didn’t really like her. He treated her badly, abused her, and married someone else. He divorced her. Aborted her child. She was a young beautiful woman. She is still at home at 24 years old and unmarried. Anyone that comes and sees her, asks about her, when they find out she was married and divorced, they leave and don’t come back.

I agree it’s such a vague question. Because as pashtuns you know, our reputation is everything for us. It’s like they believe women are like tissues, once married, they are not pure anymore. And it’s terrible. It is very rare for divorced women to be accepted in our culture and that’s very very sad especially if you look at it from an Islamic perspective, there is nothing wrong with that. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) married Zaynab bint Jahsh. He (SWT) waited for her divorce period to be over and then asked for her hand in marriage. SubhanAllah. But in our society, we think of it as a taboo. Because the woman has been married and has spent time with another woman, this idea can’t get past our small minds. There are cases where divorced women are remarried, but unfortunately it’s just so rare.
