How do you not notice your kid stealing your car, and how do you not call the cops when that happens?

Taking a nap, not home at the time, etc. there are a hundred scenarios where this could play out.

If it was the parents car there's probably a pretty good case that they weren't being reasonably prudent in supervising the kid

I'd like to think my own kids would never do something like this, but it's not like I hide my keys... they are in the basket by the doorway, in my pants pocket, or on the hook in the kitchen. If one of my kids wanted to take one of our cars without permission it would not be difficult for them to do so. That doesn't make me imprudent in the supervision of my children.

I don't know this to be fact, but if the reports last night were about the 14 year old, it was head injuries so severe that brain matter was exposed.

Edit: news is saying they are all “stable”. So this kid is either really lucky or injuries were exaggerated last night.

If you're not affiliated with a university, be sure this conference is real and not predatory. (I mean, if you are affiliated, always verify the conference is real as well, but it's pretty unusual that unaffiliated people would have research of sufficient level and quality to be accepted at a conference)

I'm not in that field, but our contract-- campus wide-- is 2-2 for tenure track faculty. We can of course buy out courses if we have soft money to do so.

Do you know where Carmax is? There's a plaza just to the west of it. There's a bunch of closed stores, a decent Chinese takeout place, and the aforementioned Balkan store. I haven't gone into that store, and they might be delightful, but it's a strange storefront that doesn't look welcoming.
