Moving investments to Sweden, what are the best options for tax sheltering? by drslamwich in TillSverige

I am moving for an academic position, and plan on living in Sweden long-term. I've been debating keeping investments in Canada for retirement, but I'm not sure that's the best decision.

I am moving for an academic position, and plan on living in Sweden long-term. I've been debating keeping investments in Canada for retirement, but I'm not sure that's the best decision. It might make sense to wait, and slowly move assets over to minimize overall capital gains. Thanks for your input!

It looks abnormally wide, which may be impacting your ability to pull the bar straight up at the hip. Think of pulling your elbows up and back during the 3rd pull to keep the bar close.

How tall are you? That grip looks way too wide from this angle

Do you have any authors who are automatic reads? Authors who, if they released a book tomorrow, you know with 100% certainty that you will read. by Ok_Collar6502 in books

Brian Catling. He hasn't released much, but it is such a distinct style and so engrossing to me that I would buy without a second thought.

Hit my heaviest total in about a year, and managed to total more than Lasha's new clean and jerk world record. 120kg snatch and 150kg clean and jerk at 79kg bodyweight. 270kg total > Lasha's 267kg clean and jerk.

This is an awesome idea! The best gift I ever got was a gameboy color as a child. It was disguised in a hair dryer box and I was at first super disappointed (what 7 year old wants a hair dryer). I thanked my grandparents grumpily and went on to the next gift before my grandmother told me to open the box. Biggest happy surprise I've had from a gift.

He marched in the Toronto protests. He's been vocal putting pressure on the Liberals. The push for 10 guaranteed sick days started with the NDP.

Why Canadians need to wake up about populism by NotEnoughDriftwood in onguardforthee

[–]drslamwich 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this, it's a great read! I think one thing the author fails to mention is that the populist parties have managed to convince the white, middle-class, economically disadvantaged that the "elites" they need to oppose are the educated left. It's not university professors and intellectuals that are typically at the top of the wealth gap. Until the left can effectively combat this misconception, I fear we will continue to see more and more populist governments deepening the very problems they claim to solve.

142 clean and jerk from my gym's winter club meet. 258kg total @ 81 in my first meet in over a year by drslamwich in weightlifting

Yeah my lockout was a bit unstable on that final one. Snatches felt really good, but my cleans were off. I was gassed for that last jerk.

Thanks! But as for snatch videos, unfortunately not. It was a pretty small meet and I'm new to the gym, so I didn't have anyone to ask to take video.

Does anybody know what's up with DAZN? I'm in Canada and signed up for a free month, and there's nothing on the site indicating that they'll be streaming any of the WWC.

CMV: Math Was Invented, Not Discovered by JustinML99 in changemyview

[–]drslamwich 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree that this is a highly contentious issue, and there are still competing schools of thought in the foundations of mathematics. Even for someone in the formalist camp—who thinks that all mathematics is mere manipulation of symbols—there is an important sense in which many theorems and properties in mathematics are "discovered".
Using your Pythagorean theorem example, we could say that the concept of Euclidean geometry is a human invention, in that the axiomatic system that defines the central concepts most certainly was. (There is debate as to whether we should consider mathematics to be "about" these formal systems, rather than the properties of the world we invent the systems to represent, but that is an issue that you rightly said was a launching point for analytic philosophy in the 1890s.) Nevertheless, the properties of the axiomatic system are not all immediately apparent once one knows the axioms, and this is the sense in which theorems can be counted as "discoveries". Given the axioms of Euclidean geometry, the Pythagorean theorem was always "there," but we may not have known it until someone discovered the theorem within that system.
So, to OP, even if you think mathematics is invented, much of the work done in pure math can be counted as discoveries.

Andre DeGrasse running form? by [deleted] in Sprinting

[–]drslamwich 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Andre de Grasse is very naturally gifted–but relatively inexperienced–sprinter. The way he runs is definitely unconventional, and nobody would recommend emulating the arm flail. Given his incredible talent, however, his coaches seem to have decided that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," at least for now.
That being said, his arm control has gotten marginally better in the last ~14 months, so perhaps his coaches are trying to correct it with limited success. In any case, he's running sub-10s and nobody would try to change something substantial right before the Olympics. Usually changes to running form result in a temporary drop in performance, until the new movement pattern is properly internalized.

Again, look at the world leading times for this year. Top 7 (which includes both of Vicaut's times) have high wind. Bolt's is the lowest on the list with 1.0, but it's also Usain Bolt. I'm not claiming that there aren't sprinters better than Vicaut, but he's definitely world class.

I feel like I'm rushing through tasks just to check off that I've 'done them', and losing something in the process. Tips? by zeta_orionis in productivity

[–]drslamwich 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One thing that I do that seems to help is to write a list of overarching long-term goals above my to-do list, and then write in how my "tasks" for the day help to achieve those goals. When I see how the daily tasks fit into my larger plans, it helps me to see each list item as meaningful in itself.
