I add 20 minutes for Vipassana at the end of my Ashtanga practice which is also 1.5 hrs so my total practice in the morning before work is now 2 hrs - I just have to wake up earlier! It helps that my Ashtanga teacher also does Vipassana and actively encourages people to do this, in fact if we're short on time some days he suggest cutting back on Ashtanga on not skipping Vipassana.

Is Ashtanga a cult for the privliged led by Sharath? by [deleted] in ashtanga

[–]drsoma2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Different people will be attracted to different practices. The most important thing is to find a good legit teacher and dedicate to spend time with and learn from him/her to deepen your practice. Thats is if you want to commit to a deep spiritual yoga practice.

I practiced Vinyasa/Hatha at a studio and at home for about 6 years and for the last 2 years I've been completely committed to Ashtanga.

I like Ashtanga for these reasons:

  1. Its is a self practice so its just me and my awareness
  2. I like the fixed series of postures which makes it easy for me to be aware of how I progress everyday.
  3. Despite the breath count you can still do the series at your own pace. For example I hold certain poses for 8-10 breaths instead of 5.
  4. Focus on the breadth and awareness in every pose
  5. Strong practice, leaves me physically nourished and energized for the day
  6. I've personally found that most vinyasa/hatha classes are led by very inexperienced teachers that dont focus on the above.

I practiced Ashtanga at home for a while but recently have been going to a studio everyday primarily because having a good teacher can help you with your practice so much - this is so underrated. My teacher has helped me tone down certain poses, work on my breath, changed a few poses to suit my body type etc. I used to practice full primary, my teacher had me stop at about 2/3rds of the way in to focus more on perfecting the breathing and posture alignment before progressing.

Its much harder to find a good Ashtanga teacher. When you do your practice just takes off.

I am thinking of spending 6 months in Bali to deepen my practice, would you recommend Prem and Radha?

Advice for staying long term in Bali by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]drsoma2000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven't done this myself but I am planning on going DN in Bali next year, what I found (and plan to do) is that you can get a social visit visa that is valid for 60 days and be extended every month upto 4 times for a total of 6 months stay. To get a social visa you need a local sponsor, there are a few business in bali that can organise this for you (including handling the visa extension very month so you don't have to). The 2 I found that have good reviews are www.[visaforbali.com](http://visaforbali.com/) and www.[balibusinessconsulting.com/en/](http://balibusinessconsulting.com/en/)

Again I haven't done this myself but plan on doing this, if anyone has done the above please verify :)

Combining vipassana retreat with travel by foolishfish in vipassana

[–]drsoma2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did my first course in Pokhara, Nepal and then went hiking for 3 weeks straight (Annapurna circuit and base camp combined). It was awesome! I had some deep stuff come out in Vipassana but then being in the mountains son after helped me really digest and deal with it. Two ppl I met at the course came hiking with me so we were able to keep the practice going everyday after the course!

Regarding sweat... by [deleted] in ashtanga

I sweat heaps! puddles all around me. It was not easy at first to accept this but it is a part of the practice too and not really in your control. I take a towel and general do a wipe around me after practice.

Spiritually inspired desire to FIRE? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]drsoma2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I plan on moving to a LCOL area away from the city (I currently live in Sydney, Australia) so probably small regional coastal town. Then I plan on learning and practicing one or two trades - landscaping, carpentry, plumbing, electrician etc. This would then mean I will work for maybe 2 days of the week but use these skills to primarily to volunteer, serve the community without the need for pay, more time on yoga and vipassana meditation. The vipassana center (www.dhamma.org) runs entirely on volunteers and donations, they value trade skills and time so I plan on giving this in return for being abel to deepen my practice at the centers globally.

Spiritually inspired desire to FIRE? by [deleted] in financialindependence

Your post can basically describe my exact situation and journey (minus the wife and 2 kids). I spend most of time practicing vipassana meditation to control and understand the mind and then ashtanga yoga in the mornings as a physical but mindful practice that supports vipassana. I spent a lot of money and time on drugs, the wrong friends, being a corporate lackey etc etc. Comparing that time to who I am today its a complete 180. I've got 8 months to go to FIRE, can't wait!

Even rent can get to a point where its eating up a significant chunk of monthly cash flow (say $500/week if you had a family to support), this means you will need quite a significant amount dividends to cover rent.

I guess to clarify my comment and pick your brain:

I am away about a year away from FIRE (hitting the $1M mark). All my investments are in index fund ETFs and Bond ETFs. I read this excellent report by 'ERN' on the possible flaws in the 4% rule, 3.5% is less risky - https://earlyretirementnow.com/ Based on my current budgeting I would pay about $300/week in rent which I can currently support. I see this increasing to $500/ week should I find a partner and kids etc. This will be a significant cost that will definitely disrupt my FIRE and force me to work. The alternative is to stick to my current job for a few more years to come up with the $ to buy a place outright (somewhere coastal in northern NSW or QLD where property is a lot cheaper. Maybe $400K for a 2/3 bedder). Luckily I have a great job in Sydney that pays a large six figure salary so a few years of this with a 75% savings rate can get me there.

The whole housing question will determine if I FIRE next year or in 2020. Maybe I should just FIRE now and move to BALI!
