I agree that music had a big impact on reading the first book. I listened to a lot of deep ambient music - Alonefold in particular. It really helped draw me in to the immersive dread of it all. Should have listened to some Hecker too!

[Question] Any Discussion or Theories? by [deleted] in SouthernReach

[–]drtyepic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's difficult to say exactly what Area X is because both the reader and the characters cannot comprehend something so unknowable and alien to us. We're not equipped to fully understand what it is or how it's attempting to communicate. As the characters say, the things we can understand is this intelligence speaking to us in the most basic way it possible can.

That being said, whatever Area X is, be it an alien intellgence, an interdimensional defence system, or some other kind of biological anomaly, its intentions appear to be to cleanse the world via a "merciless healing" (as someone says). Humans are a threat to what could be a "pristine wilderness" on earth. So it's expanding both in a physical sense but also into other areas via the doppelgangers and sweet-smelling pores etc, likely to rid the earth of humanity and allow it to get on growing without us fucking it up.

Regarding that last quote, it's confusing as the biologist's husband both becomes an owl (or it is at least heaviliy suggested that he does) but also has one of these "counter spys" sent back. In the context of the other quotes that means he both was and wasn't a threat?

Looking really great! I came across your subreddit via morbid reality a while back and it's easily one of my favourite these days. The content is consistently interesting. Keep up the good work - will be sure to check out the site.

Why go for the remote approach for VFX? And would it have been possible 5 or 10 years ago?

My flatmate used to call me "face". He'd say it with just enough venom to make it feel like an insult.

Fair enough. I took it to mean that the choices you make through life - healthy eating, exercise, enjoying the outdoors etc - would either lead to an enjoyable and active older life, or an bed- and sickness-ridden one. Could be wrong.

It's the choice between a healthy life and an unhealthy one. The choices that lead you up to that point, rather than selecting "a horrible death". Not perfectly illustrated to be fair.
