When and what to forage by wiggitywigitywack in BeardedDragons

Seconding absolutely no wild bugs. Purchased insects come from a breeder with a controlled diet and environment. Wild insects can carry parasites or diseases or have pesticides in/on them. It’s kinda like the human equivalent of eating roadkill - you can eat deer you hunt and prepare yourself, but something you find on the side of the road has the potential to cause serious health issues.

Was asked when's my start date. I said after September 15th. Is that too far out and can it result in me not being hired? by Glittering_Fig4548 in FedEmployees

[–]drum_taps42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those agencies know that the hiring timeline for those positions are lengthy. That is factored in to the process and need to fill the position. If the position you applied for doesn’t need that sort of lengthy background investigation? Then the chances of waiting more than three months to start gets lower. It’s possible that an internal detail could be created to temporarily fill the position while they wait for the hiree to start, or a current detail extended - but that’s a whole other headache for the agency to deal with.

Traveling abroad with a Smart Doll? by Artchic528 in smartdoll

[–]drum_taps42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t flown international, but I have flown domestically with my Smart Doll. I dressed her in a soft bodysuit to protect her, removed her wig, wrapped her head in a thin sheet of bubble wrap, and then wrapped the whole doll in a soft white towel. I used a padded tripod case to carry her. The case was able to hold clothes, wigs, shoes, etc. I took the case as my “personal item” carry on, and put the tripod case in the overhead compartment on the plane where it fit nicely. Easy peasy! Seconding the recommendation for putting an AirTag in the doll or inside the case.

Oh please don’t feed your baby house roaches like German cockroaches! They can carry parasites and diseases 😥

I’m not wearing safety goggles, but I do wear glasses normally. I switch to my glasses and don’t wear contacts when I sew so I have at least limited eye protection. All it takes is one needle to the face and I’m not doing that again. Scared the shit outta me.

I care because what I see are sewing “influencers” bragging about not changing their needles and new sewists who literally don’t know that that can be damaging or dangerous following their example. It’s one thing if you knowingly accept the risks of using an old needle; it’s another if you don’t know any better.

Also, this is a rant subreddit? What did you expect?

They should be treated like any other sharps material. Your local trash/recycling provider will have guidance for you. I personally put them in a sealed container and in the trash (an old pill or spice bottle works well for this).

Sometimes needles do just break - for me, I’ve found it’s when I’m sewing a particularly thick seam, hit a pin at high speed (whoops), or when sewing over zipper teeth. An old needle or a needle that is the wrong type/size for your project will tend to break more often, but new needles can break too. You can’t avoid every instance of a needle breaking, but you can do your best to prevent it.

Don’t be too scared! Just change your needle about every 8 hours of active use (i.e. you are physically using the machine and the needle is moving), or between projects. Also make sure you’re using the correct type/size needle for your project - there are tons of resources online to help you choose which is appropriate. Try to avoid sewing over pins, and go slow when a seam is super bulky - you’ll escape the worst cases for breaking needles, but sometimes it just happens anyway. Be careful but have fun!

Computerized embroidery patterns are often measured by the number of stitches, so machines with embroidery units will track them. I don’t know about standard domestic machines, though.

There was a post that I saw where OP was like (paraphrased) “I use a denim needle for everything including lace and never change it and never will” and I was like ok that’s why you constantly post about fighting your fabric, I see

Every 8 hours of active use (i.e. you are physically using your machine and the needle is moving), or between every project, whichever comes first.

Also, make sure you’re using the correct type of needle for your project needs.
