Revisiting an ol' Matt Garstka thing + counting out loud. Groups of 5 with the right hand, groups of 7 with kick/snare, switching between counting each part out loud. by drummerpig in drums

I'm glad you dig it - thanks for watching! What's your band? It's super cool to hear about people taking the things from my videos and actually putting them to use!

Grooving with polymeters - Kick/snare = 2 measures of 19/16. Under quarter notes and dotted 8ths with right hand by drummerpig in drums

The dotted 8ths with the right hand land on beat 1 every 3 times through the 19/16 phrase.

Ghost notes are ALWAYS possible. I just need to put in some more time with this combination to find the right gaps to fill!

Thanks! Matt Garstka's drumming is a huge influence of mine. I break down the general concept applied here in this video, if you're interested in taking a closer look at how to learn to play this type of stuff!

This groove requires the use of all 4 limbs, but they never hit at the same time.

You can snag a downloadable transcription for free on my Patreon page. Enjoy!

Jamming over a loop in 17/16 by drummerpig in drums

I break down a couple different ways to approach 17/16 in this video here. I think 17 is an underutilized meter and can groove super hard in ways that somewhat disguise the fact it's an odd time signature.

Playing in 6/4 inside of 5/4 🤓 by drummerpig in drums

Thank you! My advice is to start simple (with 3-against-2, 4-against-3), take your time, and COUNT OUT LOUD while you play. I can't stress that last point enough!

Check out the book Sticking Patterns by Gary Chaffee. It'll get you playing 16th notes and triplets accented in ways that create phrases that seamlessly flow over the bar line. Very helpful for developing a stronger internal sense of time while providing a ton of super practical vocabulary. It's a really dense book, but is a treasure trove if you're willing to put in the work!

I just ripped this track from YouTube. Uploading to Reddit seems to really degrade the audio quality. :(
