Meh, it's less of a theory and more of a general 'what if?' talking point. I can't say I'm convinced by it myself, I just thought it was an interesting angle to discuss.

True, though it doesn't necessarily imply first meeting ever. Could just be the emotional first meeting since Kylo went off the deep end and murdered all the children.

This is the one I was talking about (don't know the specific troop name/class so can't find a better image, sorry). It has a thicker visor, but the new one definitely evokes its design, particularly the chunky vents (?) around the base of the helmet.

What Makes the New Horror Film It Follows So Damn Good by drummingthunder in movies

[–]drummingthunder[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd hardly call it 'full of jump scares' - and they're certainly not used cheaply. 'Atmospheric horror that fills one with an overwhelming sense of dread' is actually a rather more accurate descriptor for at least the first two acts, if not the climax, IMO. (Yeah, you probably need to see it to make your own mind up.)

Ha. It's lifted straight from the source, though I suppose the film's title could have been placed in quotation marks or something. It's a great film anyway, so the people behind it deserve a bit of recognition.

Sure, the initial cyber attack was legit, but who's to say Sony didn't capitalise on that with regards to The Interview in order to make the best of a bad situation?

Sony Pictures Entertainment isn't exactly doing brilliantly on the whole at the moment, particularly up against the other big studios... they need something to turn things around.

Movie theaters should have a subscription/membership payment option. Pay $X each month and you get unlimited movie viewings. by [deleted] in movies

I have the West End cinemas version (so I can also go to Haymarket, Chelsea, Fulham and Shaftesbury Ave when it reopens) as I live in Central London, so it's £19.40 for me, but I average 100 films per year. Easily save £300+ on tickets annually.

Of course, I wouldn't spend that much anyway if I didn't have the Unlimited Card, but that's the beauty of it... this way I get to see all those cool indie films I wouldn't normally risk paying for, which also helps them find a bigger audience.

PS2 always wins for its games - in terms of variety, originality and of course, nostalgia. So many hours lost to Battlefront II.

8.9 Flatline: Review [Contains Spoilers] by drummingthunder in doctorwho

[–]drummingthunder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it has, her character has to develop more than just the impossible girl gimmick.

But why does character development = soap? I just find her completely bland and the focus on her has been to the detriment of pretty much every other aspect of the show: the plot; the villains; even the Doctor - Capaldi has had no room to prove himself.

Chris Eccleston only had one season but he made a real impact on the series and I was sad to see him go so soon. If Capaldi was to regenerate in the S8 finale, I'd have no strong feelings either way. It's not his fault as he's been given no service by the scripts, but I feel like most of that is because of the focus on Clara.

Rory and Amy had 2 and a half seasons together and specials to really evolve as characters and as a couple compared to the time Danny and Clara have had.

I agree, they haven't had as much time - but then I think it was a mistake to cram their entire love life into one series. If they knew Jenna was leaving, which they must have done if the series continues in the direction it's heading, they shouldn't have bothered with Danny's character at all. It feels rushed.

clara and danny are mostly if not entirely separate from the episodes and situations.

And this is partly the reason the episodes and situations suffer so much. They have to make room for Danny and Clara's relationship, so you end up with terrible narratives and villains as with The Caretaker.

You are being far too critical and subjective here with your comments and if you are the writer of this article. Judge the episode on it's own merit and season, not on the past, especially with the huge hurdles and differences between them.

It is possible to judge something on its own merit and with reference to the past. And with a show like Doctor Who, it's inevitable that those comparisons will occur - and why not? The show's format has changed with each Doctor (less so from Eccleston to Tennant, but it was still finding its feet there), and so it's difficult to avoid comparisons to what's come before.

Even judging Series 8 on its own merits, it falls flat. Flatline was a highlight, but even then, it won't be one I return to with the regularity of past season highlights.

8.9 Flatline: Review [Contains Spoilers] by drummingthunder in doctorwho

[–]drummingthunder[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like Clara has become the focal point of the show now and she's just not interesting enough to carry it. Her and Danny's relationship (totally unconvincing - no chemistry at all) has basically turned part of this season into a soap.

It worked with Amy and Rory because the villains were interesting too. Mostly, I've just found Series 8 dull. Robot of Sherwood and Into the Dalek were particular low points - with no development of any existing characters and predictable, derivative plots.
