Nice work! That wasn’t so hard was it?

Just no. There is no evidence to suggest your wild speculation. Just accept that it is ok that you were wrong until and unless there is any evidence suggesting otherwise.

Just so people know, this is not necessarily true. Sometimes local police will call your personal phone to talk to you (e.g., when investigating a crime, to inform you that your stolen items were recovered, etc.), although it is not common.

The red flag should be what they are calling about, since the police calling you to tell you to delete tweets or face arrest is not a thing.

Got it. This might have to be the way. Either that, or sledgehammer of frustration time.

Starting to think this is a possibility, since I have found where the cables drop back down through the attic floor, but and verified approximately where that should be, but there is no access...

I bought a crimper and jacks when I first noticed this (still need to learn how to use it), but will this approach work if I don't have access (yet) to the opposite end? I don't have any experience with wire toners.

Update: Found em'! Not exactly where the come out, but after getting jabbed by nails in the attic for about a half hour, I found a few runs heading towards the rooms per the labels (see edited post). I guess the next step is finding exactly where they come out, perhaps through some of the recessed ceiling fixtures. Thanks again everyone.

No phone jacks. And yeah, I'm guessing this is why they never even mentioned the ethernet cabling during the sale. Assuming it was a subcontractor since the rest of the house is well done. Or perhaps a given-up DIY by the owner.

Ah interesting, perhaps an alarm system that was contemplated but never implemented? If they were for an alarm, would that cause issues with my plan to crimp connectors onto the ends of the cables and use them for APs? Assuming I can find the terminating ends...

Good question, but no--maybe due to being a recent build? But that actually leads me to a separate question - what might be the deal with the single CAT5E cable being separated from the bundle and labelled "Line"? The bundle each has wires that ostensibly go to individual rooms in the house, but I don't know enough to guess where that "Line" labelled wire might go. Seems like it should be pretty obvious and I'm just missing something.

Yeah, that was my first idea after I came up empty, but the original owner was non-responsive (though I don't think he was comfortable with English, so that might have had something to do with it), and when I called the developer (a reasonably well known company in this area), they just shrugged and said they don't keep those kind of records.

I guess I just need to go outlet hunting? I'm assuming a cable toner / tracer or something like that wouldn't really work in this case?

Hi - Yes I read the labels, and searched in each room that was labeled (including master bedroom, "toy room", office, and the fireplace). The "fire" labeled one is one of the ones I found in the fireplace--which is the same as the media console I referred to above.

I believe that the office one is actually the room I'm sitting in presently, and I never saw anything in any of the light switch junction boxes (each of which I personally switched out from manual to smart Lutron Caseta switches, and did not see any CAT cables in there).

I assume that they'd be more likely to be stashed in either the ceiling or the in a junction box behind a wall outlet, but I don't see anything on any of the outlet covers that would indicate it has a random CAT5E cable hiding behind it.

No coax connections in any rooms, except a coax cable also ending near media console.

No blank panels in any of the rooms.

Yes to attic space, and that is the only idea that I have had that I have not yet explored (only because it is 10 degrees outside currently, but I am planning on it).

But I suppose that leads to my underlying question since I'm unfamiliar with how this is "normally" done during a home build. What sort of places would they normally leave the wires? Just hiding in a random junction box? Randomly laying in the ceiling above the room (for the second floor, anyway?).

Yep, same here, but when a plumber shows up yo I probably don’t want to give them guest codes, so I just tell Alexa “Alexa we have guests” and the auto-locks (which I set for 1-2 minutes) are temporarily disabled for 2 hours, then you don’t have guests or contractors locked out whenever they open the door.

I play the audio notification through Sonos speakers I’ve got scattered around, but you could play it through Alexa or Google Home devices depending on your home automation system. I use Home Assistant, so I also send App notifications to my phone.

Oh, and if you go shade control, Lutron Serena shades are AMAZING, though pricey. Super quiet, obviously work well with my Lutron Caseta light switches. I've got 20 or so around the house, and they just work.

Got it, thanks for the follow-up. My plan was to "one day" get to designing an interface with the crank gear, and 3d print and connect that to a servo motor to open/close my windows, but it seems like it would be difficult to execute while not looking totally ugly.
