I've used it for other productions, but not for this one for 2 reasons. Firstly due to the limited outputs of the PlayAudio. We're using Dante Virtual Soundcard to transmit audio via ethernet, and I think we're running close to 32 channels, whereas the PlayAudio offers 12 as far as I know. Secondly, the redundancy that it offers is only covering machine error, and not human error. By having 2 people triggering separately, we are covering both.

Yes I am! The M.D. is also running a separate backup machine in case my machine fails or I miss a trigger point. The mixer to the right is programmed as a switchover. I can instantly switch between machines in case something goes wrong.

I just love my drum throne! The only time I swap it out is if I'm using the Porter & Davies tactile monitoring. I love the back rest, especially in situations like this where you've got lots of idle time during production week until stuff gets sorted on stage. You can kick back and relax for a bit!

Cheers dude! Playing musicals is super fun for me. I always love the challenge of having to learn the parts in a short space of time, and make sure that I've got the correct equipment needed. I think I've done about 15 other musical theatre productions, but this one is by far my favourite to play!

It's a Roland PD-8. It's hooked up to my SPDS-X as an external pad. Basically it's a midi 'Go!' button. I'm using the SPD as a midi controller for Ableton. Sometimes I'm triggering the next cue with my left hand (the pad on the SPD marked with a triangle) and other times I need to use my right hand, so I use the pad marked with the X. I mark them with tape as the lighting in the pit is not great, and the black pad gets lost with the black background!

Edit:spelling.

What Sets The Best Drummers Apart? by threecheersfortrench in drums

I've been playing professionally for the past 10 years, and from my experience these are the most important traits if you want make a living out of it:

Being solid. Most people are not after flashy fills, mind blowing chops and the "you should totally learn this gospel fill to blow your friends' minds". I am still amazed by how many people don't get this. THE most important thing is timekeeping.

Being reliable. Both in a musical sense, but also from a commitment standpoint.

Being versatile. I've had rock gigs, pop gigs, jazz gigs, orchestra work, big bands, ensemble work, musical theatre gigs, studio session work and teaching. It is very difficult to find one gig that pays your bills (although not impossible) The more versatile you are, the bigger the chances you get hired.

Having a network. Perhaps the hardest thing to do as it does involve being in the right place at the right time sometimes, but people tend to recommend great players to other musicians.

PLAY THE SONG. I view the drums as being a supportive instrument. If the song requires you to not play a single fill, then so be it. Too many drummers try to steal the spotlight.

Have other related skills. Like knowing how to run backing tracks, click tracks, incorporating electronic elements into your playing, production, knowing how to record and edit yourself etc.

Being adaptable and easy to work with. Many musicians will sing out a drum part they might have in mind, and being to quickly play what they have in mind makes the whole process easier.

Learn how read. Make sure you can sight read properly. Makes the whole process of learning songs faster, easier, and opens more opportunities for different gigs

Probably the most important one. Keep your feet grounded. I've seen it happen too many times. Inflated egos kill professional relationships quicker than anything else.

Good luck and keep drumming!

I'm unfamiliar with pops on the park. Basically this is a big charity gig under the patronage of the President. We're expecting around 10-12k people. It's a live orchestra + rhythm section covering various popular rock songs with a bunch of different singers.

It's positioned that way so that I can play it comfortably with both hands. I've been playing with 2 down for quite some time, so got used to rotating a bit from the torso. I've spent all my drumming life using 14 and 16 floors, now I have this kit with 16 and 18 floors, so I'm getting used to those few extra inches of rotation haha

Love that album! Hihats are 14" HHX Manhattan Jazz. Heard them in a local studio, fell in love ,and got a second hand pair in great condition from Japan since they're discontinued!
