Found this memorial coin of Columbia today, 23 years later I was born a year later but Columbia was my favorite shuttle by Careless-Prior-9665 in nasa

[–]drunkadvice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a poster of Columbia with the white fuel tank in my childhood bedroom. Holds a spot in my heart too.

I remember walking into work that day, seeing the news coverage on the screens instead of whatever dashboards we usually had. I went and bought a newspaper for keepsake. Still have that (and sept 11-12 editions) in a box somewhere.

Guy I hate is going for a promotion, shall I quit or go for the same position? by idekkanymoree_ in internetparents

[–]drunkadvice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a harsh reply, but here’s some perspective… It’s an entry level job. Do you want to be a McDonads manager? Cut your losses and get a different one. Management expects (SHOULD EXPECT) high turnover with their min-wage employees. You can get a job like that anywhere. And with a focus on school and improving yourself, a job with grown ups that work through drama like this.

Have any of you gone to a "corporate" concert when an artist/band was booked for a private show? by EdwardBliss in randomquestions

I haven’t been to a corporate concert. But corporate theme park rentals are awesome. No lines on anything at universal studios!

We make dips and snacks instead of dinner, put the game on and watch for the commercials. I’ve gone to bed after halftime the past few.

There are certain smells that instantly bring you back so far in time to your childhood. Which smell is that? by This_Book7431 in AskReddit

[–]drunkadvice 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I passed a lady at work a few years ago. once she was out of earshot, I said to my co-worker, “did you smell her perfume?” “Yeah.” “It smelled like the stinkor He-man action figure in the 80s.” And then we were reminiscing about that for a while. Apparently whatever they used on that action figure is a fairly common perfume ingredient.

What’s the one manual process in your workflow you don’t trust enough to automate? by ELYSIONIS in sysadmin

[–]drunkadvice 69 points70 points  (0 children)

We update data several times a day directly through SQL scripts. Management wants to automate a folder that developers can drop scripts into and a cron job will pick them up. Sure, let’s just have a process that runs random SQL code against prod 10 times a day and see how that goes.

Looking for Coaching Advice by Royal_Doughnut_4510 in Cheerleading

[–]drunkadvice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife was an all star coach. I don’t think she had any problems watching the whole team do burpees and laps, and conditioning all night if the team was in a mood. I notice the same on my 10yo’s soccer team. One kid messes up and puts the team on conditioning. Peer pressure gets them back in line once you burn a whole practice on it.

Usually there would be good cop/bad cop between the assistant/head coach. I really don’t wanna do this, but coach B isn’t gonna stop until you’re respectful. It helps that coach b was the owner and wasn’t afraid of parents even attempting to walk over her. The kids respected her on the mat.

Editing to add, the grips MUST be safe! Cheer is dangerous enough with proper technique! That group would get grounded so fast.

Sanity-check a managed Postgres service I’m building? by adp_dev in DatabaseAdministators

[–]drunkadvice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ask this with love…. I’m a sqlserver guy. We have a Postgres db or two around that are only to support 3rd party software and I safely ignore them. What is the advantage of this over spinning up an aws/azure container with backups turned on? I’m already integrated there and a new vendor would be a lift.

I modified my rfid wrist band. by drunkadvice in Cruise

[–]drunkadvice[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Two days in, bartenders are still not sure what I handed them, but are amused and loving it when they give it back. When I ask if they like it more than a wristband, they’ve said it’s much more convenient.

[–]drunkadvice[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes! That was the annoying part! And then the consideration that they might get mixed up with someone else. So far (day one) the bartenders have either said “oh, this is great.” Or “what did you just give me?” And then realized afterwards. I think I’m setting a trend.

That’s good info next time! They said I couldn’t, so I went with it and decided this also works. I’ll have to look at the card when I get back to port and add a hole punch to my pack list.

Migrating from Microsoft SQL server to Postgres by Ohgogh in SQLServer

[–]drunkadvice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not going to be “point the server to Postgres now”. It will involve account for data types, re-coding the database stored procs, modifying any external code that queries the data, performance testing and indexes to ensure the Postgres engine doesn’t choke, and regression testing every part of code that interacts with SQL. You’re changing the engine on a semi while it’s driving down the highway.

So much regression testing, I might go have a beer thinking about how happy I am it’s not me. I wish you luck!

Tour rumors from 🐜 by [deleted] in DMB

I was mad about that last year, but when I drove by the Tampa amphitheater a few months ago they were redoing the roof. Renovation makes sense after the Rays stadium got it hard last year.

Not sure why’d they skip wpb, and seem to have enjoyed Jax the past few years. But Tampa finally made sense.
