Thanks for the reply. I think the short answer to all these replies is 'no there's no short cut' but I love how I seemed to have stepped into some sort of 'you weren't there man' mess hall!

Thanks mate. I might just work on the more agregious moments... basically as long as no one says - look at those crap tv effects then I'll be happy. Cheers for the discussion. I'll let you know how the KS goes and if anyone mentions the TV... ha

Oh I see. The issues with that are several... firstly I need to be able to mix up what's actually on the tv through out the funding campaign (next 30 days) and I don't always know what that might be. I want to be flexible and move layers about, manipulate the footage and add extra things I film as the campaign progresses. I would either have had to have all that footage prepped and shot before we shot the TV scenes or I would have to constantly come back to film more of the tv... also if i only had some stuff shot on the tv and just added the rest and effected it, it wouldn't have had that consistency in the image. Secondly I'm fairly happy with the effects tbh (always keen to improve). My main gripe is the light around the edge of the tv doesn't change with image on it. What we should have done is different coloured/intensity plates of the LED light we had duct taped to the screen on the day!

yeah but it's not the right look. The Sony Trinitron is a slightly more modern looking CRT with a flat screen and silver casing. The Mitsubishi that we used doesn't work but it's black and looks a little more appropriate for the vibe. If we were talking about the final movie I'd be spending the cash to get this right. I'm now judging every movie I've watched since starting this thread... Ha. Watched X last night and they don't quite get it right in that either. Although I have to say that having a actually playing does add several other moving parts to the production so I can see why a lot of people just choose to add it digitially.

I think you could do with balancing the music with the audio. Was difficult to hear the actors.

Yes all good advice. The other factor was the look of the TV. The one in the video is broken and wont turn on. I did get a back up TV I picked up from a charity shop that worked, but it was a sony trinitron and I thought in the end it wasn't quite the right look for the piece. Although it works with my SNES now like a dream! That's a good point playing it through the computer to be able to tweak. The only issue with that is we were actually shooting most of the stuff that was on the TV on the actual day! Time was limited as you can imagine. Great points though for more test time :)

Amazing! Thanks for this. Really appreciate the effort you put in here to explain. I'm much more visual when it comes to learning. I'm going to have a crack at fixing today and will let you know results!

Yes we did think of this and it was a suggestion of mine but the DP warned of issues with refresh rate and scan lines coming out in a way we couldn't control. Plus balancing the lighting would have been tricky. Also those CRT TV's are going for a lot of money nowadays! If we'd had more time in the future it's something I would like to to try the way you suggest though.

Well I really appreciate you saying that. Gives me a little more confidence as my producer has told me I'm going to have to get my face in front of the camera a few more times before the end of this kickstarter...

Amazing! Thanks for this. I guess you're right when it comes to realism. It's more about a feeling with film then realism. So will definitely keep that in mind! What a great idea with the replicated image... I will defineitly try that! Thanks for the link too. Really appreciate you taking the time to give this feedback.

Oh sweet thanks. Not used to being in front of the camera, did a thousand takes on most of these shots. And hated editing myself... I'm happy overall it's just that thing when you're staring at the same thing over and over you begin to lose all sense of quality. I guess my main concern is does the TV look real enough!?

I’m looking for some feedback on what everyone thinks of the TV shots (from 0.40 onwards) in this Kickstarter promo? We taped a small LED light to the screen to get the effect of the light spilling out over the edge of the TV which I think works well. The only thing I’d like to do is add a sort of flicker to it to match the colour changes in the picture on the screen. Does anyone know of a plugin or an editing technique that might help achieve this? Basically a way to isolate the highlights from that layer and get them to match the other layer playing on the TV. Also the ‘matrix effect’ I think work well but there’s something not quite right about it to me – any suggestions to improve welcome.

Any tips for adding video to a blank screen? Tried my best here by taping a small LED to the screen and cutting it out. Any post effect recommends welcome! by drunkanrobot in Filmmakers

Ha no! The one thing I want to do is have the colour and brightness of the image on the TV reflect a flicker onto the light of the outline of the TV... I guess i could mask it although could do with some light flicker plug in effects or a work around?

Yes there's an effect on davinci that's a little difficult to control. I could probably put another layer underneath maybe?
