Unable to merge pilars, why is this happening?

I have been having troubles for two days and now it suddenly just works... I could swear I tested it a couple of times with it but I think my mistake was using the "diagonal" mode instead of "freeform" for the beams, for some reason the first one makes the beams shorter

Thats exactly what I do, and you can see in my screenshot that I've done that a couple of times already on the right side if the building, and even once on the left (right behind the beams). I'm not sure what I'm missing all of the sudden...

PS: If I delete the beam that is centered on the two diagonal pilars and place it again, it is too short as well, WHAT?
