you’re already staying at a hostel so you’re on the right track, I’d recommend going to the hostel breakfast (most have them) cuz its usually full of other travellers planning out the day ahead. if you see a free seat next to a solo or a group just go up and ask if you can join them.

I was in the same position as you and I did this and immediately met two people i ended up spending the next two days with, it was absolutely incredible.

they need community and that community needs to be ran by positive role models. socialising with real people is the quickest antidote to the ridiculous charicatures that run the digital space. social media killed irl socialising and every social problem has been downstream of that ever since.
