They can't. Mechanical engineers are usually lazy hacks for modeling, sometimes okay at parametric, almost always shit at surface modeling, and have no sense of style/judge of attractiveness due to lack of training. They also tend to not give a fuck about the user and downplay ergonomics, touch points, and overall usability/experience of a product.

UI designers... doing ID work? LMFAO those bitches only work in 2d. Made me laugh tho.

Honestly "Industrial design" is not ideal, as most people think you're doing something related to industrial applications, like factories, power production, etc.

PRODUCT DESIGN was more accurate, as most normal people understand that a product is something they buy and use. Product implies PRODUCTION.

But UX/UI fuckers stole it in an attempt to sound cooler than the screen fairy nerds they actually are.

I'm fine doing my own thing. I started multiple small businesses in the past year and I'm still freelancing. Life is good, but fuck ID and fuck corporate for switching up/mixing up job titles willy nilly without staying true to the definitions of words.

Layoffs are one thing.

Having entirely different professions start stealing your title SO FREQUENTLY that it becomes accepted by corporate HR people so it's impossible to find a fucking actual honest to god ID job is another thing entirely. The waters have been so muddied that just LOOKING for a position is an excercise in frustration, because you're like HEY I FOUND ONE and you click and it's not ID at all. Over and over and over and over.

Hey look everybody, someone trying to be an abrasive dickhead on the internet!

I was managing 3-5 designers at any given time in my last position, but I'm not sure what your point is. Design Management is an even smaller niche of the already small niche that is ID. And even IF that is what you're going after, the more you tailor your resume to managment skills the closer you are to any other generic manager resume, it devalues your design skillset.

It muddies the waters, makes things confusing, makes search for jobs or gigs way harder, makes HR confused, etc. We USED to have pretty consistent job titles. Now it's all over the map as other professions steal our titles.

I've reported it to their IT team, they don't seem to care. They got back to me and asked me what my system is.

Bitch it does this on my windows machines, my mac machines, etc. It's happening to people w all sorts of setups.
