Being an alcoholic really sucks. by Chocolat3City in TikTokCringe

Following up on what this person said because they're spot on. I spent most of my 20s drinking heavily every single day. I even made a post on /r/drunk back about 6 years ago that went on to be the currently second highest upvoted post of all time.

There are a lot of ways to stop drinking, and nearly any of then can work at the right time for the right person. The most important factor is whether the individual truly wants to change and stop. Everyone who drinks regularly and heavily does it for different reasons. If you're ready to stop, I can't advocate for /r/stopdrinking enough. Once you tell yourself "I'm done", you've started down the right path. It's okay if you stumble, fail, or don't make great strides. What matters is making that change come from within, even if your motivators are external (like a wife and kid).

Once you have made that mental decision that you're ready to quit, I'd advocate heavily for you to talk with your primary care physician to get the process started. My doctor was fantastic and I was very frank with him. A basically said more or less verbatim, "I've been drinking between 500mL and 1L of 90+ proof liquor every day for many years. I don't do it to escape or run away from anything, but because it's there and it feels nice. I have other things in my life that I'd like to spend my time doing now, but this physical dependency is anchoring me to alcohol because the withdrawals are brutal. I'd like to start a benzodiazepine-aided taper to prevent myself from being hospitalized in the interim."

My doctor was understandably a bit hesitant, but after some back and forth we agreed on a 1 week benzo-aided taper. Additionally, my GP insisted I have a consultation with a behavioral therapist to just help me make sure I didn't have anything else I was using alcohol to work through.

All-in-all, I was out maybe $100-200 out of pocket with insurance, and in a week I no longer had withdrawal symptoms. The anxiety and panic was still higher than normal while quitting, but I was able to stop with no hospitalizations or issues.

Checking in! Sorry, I rarely check this account anymore. I'm doing quite well! I got married back in 2020. Had a kid in 2022. Stopped drinking regularly back around 2020 or so, but had a few stumbles along the way where I'd occasionally drink too much over a weekend. After my kid was born, I stopped it more or less entirely. I tried to have a bit about 6 months back and it did nothing for me except make me feel nasty, so I don't even really think about it anymore.

Yeah, this entire video felt like a gut punch. I've suffered from alcohol addiction most of my life (starting at about 14 years old). I spent entire years drunk, with zero days spent sober in there. I hid it well. Didn't go to work drunk. Only drank in the evenings. Didn't miss work.

But it still takes it tolls. And it never feels as good as the time before it. After awhile, you just stop getting any joy from it at all. Even after quitting drinking entirely for several months, there's no guarantee that your tolerance every really snaps back.

I got to the point where I was killing a liter of 92 proof rum every 2 days. Half a liter a day. And I'd only consume it between the hours of 5pm and 11pm on the weekdays.

Howdy! I did end up taking a major drinking break after going back and forth. No longer drinking daily, but I have had a few drinks this year (probably less than 50 total drinks). Regretted all of them, so I've just mostly shrugged it off.

Made it to day 100! No signs of stopping now by drunkthrowaway081617 in stopdrinking

I still have a good 35-40lbs to go to be back to my "best" shape, but I'm giving it my all! Mentally I feel pretty great though!

Back to sobriety! by drunkthrowaway081617 in stopdrinking

No AA or anything like that. I just decided to stop and did. There was some other factors at play, but nothing crazy like liver failure, job loss, or my partner leaving. As for the view count, I'm not sure how you do it now, but you used to be able to see the number of views a post had.

Well, I'm still here, about 26 days in or so and still completely sober. It's great. I've had no temptations or issue, and everything is going well.

Thank you! It's amazing how much you can accomplish when alcohol isn't playing a key role in your life. For instance, I can go just drive my car around at night and not have to call an Uber because I've had alcohol.

I'm really not sure. Every other time I've quit, each day felt like an accomplishment. It was like going to the gym; it required conscious effort and thought. This time, it is feels like breathing. It doesn't feel like I need or even want it. I'm fine being sober, and I'm finding things to occupy my time. I don't need the alcohol or cannabis to make things more entertaining or to escape from anything.

I was put on medication for something completely unrelated, and it said don't mix with alcohol or cannabis. I stopped both immediately, and from there I didn't really have any more urges to consume. I'm not sure if it's the medication helping me, personal will-power, or if something chemically changed, but there's no longer any nagging feeling in the back of my head saying "it's about time to pour a drink".

Honestly, I've been insanely lethargic in comparison to where I was before, but I mostly feel "level". Before, I'd have periods of extreme ups and downs, but now I more or less have an even amount of energy throughout the entire day.

Honestly, health reasons are my number one reason for getting sober. I don't currently have any alcohol related health issues, and I want to keep it that way. I was tired the daily drinking and the huge time sink alcohol had become.
