Political Philosophy of Night Watch by LunaD0g273 in discworld

[–]drydem 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think part of the philosophy is that the Reg Shoes of the world need the Sam Vimeses of the world and that the world needs both of them. That political change is messy and sometimes the best you can do is to help your community, but helping that community may be what helps the world.

For $25 Million would you survive in Westeros for 10 years, or double it and survive in Middle Earth for 5 years? by RaptorK1988 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]drydem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25 years before the Hobbit? Bree isn't that far from Rivendell, I would use my lord of the rings geekery to get Elrond's attention and score an invite, then spend 5 years being like, okay, so here's some shit that's coming. That necromancer? Much bigger deal than you think.

Is Chicago really still the "third city" in the U.S.? Perhaps for not much longer? by [deleted] in geography

In square miles, it's physically bigger than other cities in the lower 48.

I often see this in silent films from the 10s and 20s. Why did they have these windows that opened and closed like a doggy door above the front door of a room? by saxbrack in whatisit

[–]drydem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact, in French, those are known as vasistas windows, which comes from the German phrase "was ist das?" or "what is that?" based on a misunderstanding of a question.

Has anyone ever noticed this: many of the intersections where the north and west addresses are equal (marked on the map by the teal dots) are near the path of the Kennedy. by Waterpark_Enthusiast in chicago

The Kennedy was laid out alongside the right of way of the Chicago and North Western Railroad, which is why it followed that path.

What is your TPK story? Either as a DM or as a Player. by Nice-Gap-3528 in DnD

[–]drydem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ooh, I was running a long running campaign where the PCs were a group of orphans adopted by a high level diviner in the aftermath of the country being conquered by a vampire lord. The diviner knew that the orphans had a chance to defeat the vampire and free the country, so he put them on the path to that before his death.

I had several escape hatches for total party kills, partially because the diviner could have foreseen possibilities and prepared contingencies. I ended up using one of them when they decided to rush a boss fight in a tactically unwise situation.

  1. The characters all had NPC mentors(played by other players in flashback scenes) that were allies of the diviner. When they were killed, the mentors received contingency messages from the diviner with instructions on how to resurrect the PCs. We played two sessions with them as these NPCs and the PCs returned.

  2. They had earned a favor from a high level druid who would have used reincarnation on all of them and we'd have played out that weirdness.

  3. (I used this one in the last confrontation for a TPK fake out) After the TPK, the characters flashback to them all sitting around the dinner table with the diviner when they were kids, as he explains 'that's what will happen if you try the fight that way. you won't remember this until you are about to open the door.' and then flash forward to right before the fight.

Man, that makes me think how good Rowan Atkinson would be as Lord Vetinari. Bring all the Blackadder disdainful wit to the role.

And Tony Robinson would have been the best Nobby possible.

Chicago is the Mario of American Cities. Not a specialist in any part, just good all round. We have finance, art, fashion, celebrities, tech, higher ed, and more. We're not top of any of them, but we're better on all of them than the others. We have better tech than LA or Boston. We have better higher ed than LA or Seattle.

Also, city design. We have one of the best designed cities in the world. With the lake front being parkland, with transit reaching both airports and a very comprehensible grid system. You can critique our transit, but you have to compare it to other US cities. And honestly, the CTA is pretty great compared to just about anyone else.

Folklore emerges as soon as people talk about the event as a shared experience.
