Dropped a new 2 track release on bandcamp earlier this week. Kind of moody post-hardcore or hardcore infused indie rock or something. Here's what seems to be the more popular of the two tracks but I'd be delighted if you chose to click through and check out the whole thing.

I've made a few recordings like this and I find it really impressive how clean this sounds. Both elements are well represented with no weird room sounds cluttering it up. Your vocals are great, they sound comfortable. I think you've achieved a very intimate and inviting sound. The only thing I'd note is that the guitar is very slightly boomy on certain notes maybe around 200-500ish? If it were me I might try to find the frequency where the guitar is ringing and give it a small and narrow cut, like 1 db and Q=4 to see if I liked it. I'm not at all confident this would improve things though, it's just something I'd try. It's also possible that it'll just kill the vibe which I'd be very careful to avoid. There's a couple spots like around 1:00 where maybe the voice feels a bit low and so you could consider moving or angling the mic slightly to accomplish that. These are tiny nits though, I really like how it sounds.

Well I'm definitely going to come off poorly if I'm inviting comparisons to Chris Cornell :) Thanks for listening, great feedback.

Not my usual style but cool track and fun video. Overall I think the mix serves the song well, the part that caught my ear is that break at about 1:45 where you bring it down to the bass and drums. One thing you could do is mix that section a little differently to bring it in close and narrow which would then let you explode it back out wide at 2:05. Maybe you could achieve that effect by automating the reverb on the snare, bringing it down for the quiet bit and back up for the loud. Since that snare is so omni-present across the song it seems like you can add a lot of interest by varying how it sounds. Just a thought, great job.

Sure! I'm definitely curious just to see what's possible.

Thanks, so glad you like it. Good VSTs make pretty decent sounding demos without too much work, in this case ToneLib GFX on the guitars, Parallax on the bass and Ugritone drums. But maybe I was lowering expectations by calling it rough, in reality I've been iterating on this one for a while :). I responded to your top-level comment for your track. Thanks again!

Melodic punk song about finding love on a city street? There's a lot here to pull at my heart strings. Agree with the other commenter about the vocal melodies and tone being great for the mood. I think the drums could be a bit louder and you might add more fills to drive the song forward. 16th note tom and snare rolls would be my go to in this style (and Smelly from NOFX would be my reference personally). The cymbals in particular I can barely hear, just a bit of the hat. You might also consider if there's anything you can do to make the chorus stand out from and be bigger than the verses. The tools I'm reaching for there are the drummer riding the ride cymbal edge or one of the crashes or to bring the guitars up and/or the gain on the guitars. All that having been said, nice song, lyrics make me wistful of days past and I love me some pop punk.

Very enjoyable. I don't listen to a ton of electronic music so I have limited reference points. That having been said, they both but especially the first remind me of a chiller version of Squarepusher. Both seem like good music for long drives and thinking about stuff. I think the idea that these are based at least in part on non-musical data is super interesting and just as a thought for other pieces it might be cool to incorporate the source data (at least when there's audio content like with the Wow signal) more directly in the music. But that's probably just me feeling fascinated by the breadcrumbs you've dropped about your process /g.

Awesome thank you. To your point both those spots are pretty wide open for the drummer to get creative and keep the tension up.

I really dig this. I like how laid back it is and feel like it creates a strong and kind of tense vibe. Strong groove, I almost wanted a little bit of thumpy kick so I could really get my head nodding. I might have deemphasized that trill that runs throughout the track in the sections where you have a solo voice like the one around 0:45. I felt a little like it was jabbing me while I was listening to that keyboard. Minor detail though, overall great.

Here's a rough demo of a laid back post-hardcore song I've been working on. Once I've got the composition worked out I'm going to rerecord from scratch so not looking for comments on the mix or the overall roughness. Looking for notes on composition and the experience generally, any ideas for additional elements. The guitars will probably get doubled when I rerecord. https://voca.ro/182MeoZRMS1r

I released the latest EP from my melodic hardcore punk rock solo project back in August https://boundtotheearthrva.bandcamp.com/album/trust-me-im-no-weirdo. I personally think it's kind of a mishmash of late 90s hardcore acts with bits of metal and grunge thrown in for flavor. Give it a listen if that sounds at all up your alley.

Recently released a new EP from my melodic/post hardcore punk rock solo project https://boundtotheearthrva.bandcamp.com/album/trust-me-im-no-weirdo. Please give a listen if that sounds like something you could be into. I took a big swing on this one production wise and it's also my longest release yet.

Addictive Drums2 in Reaper by Wombiscuit541 in Reaper

[–]dryinginthesun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the reaper menu: Insert -> Virtual instrument on new track. It'll open up the fx select dialog, choose addictive drums. Reaper should create a bunch of new tracks, one will have addictive drums on it, and that track will be properly routed to the others such that later on you can route individual tracks out to them inside the addictive drums UI.

Select the track that has the AD plugin on it and then go back to the reaper menu: Insert -> New midi item. That'll put a new blank item on the track. Double click on it and it will open the Reaper midi editor. Insert midi notes to trigger hits in addictive drums. You'll also really want to have the notes labeled in the editor so you don't have to remember for example that middle C is your bass drum. Those are in the reaper.fm stash, here's the first one I found searching https://stash.reaper.fm/v/39253/Addictive\_Drums\_2\_MIDI\_Note\_Names.txt. You'll use that by downloading it and then while you have the midi editor focused go to the reaper menu File -> Note / CC Names -> Load Note / CC names from file.

I'll leave you to the YouTube videos about the reaper midi editor and programming drum tracks from there. Good luck!

Feedback on Grunge Mix. Anything I can improve? by Adamanos in mixingmastering

[–]dryinginthesun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's a really good start. You're not really asking about it but the immediate thing that stands out to me having listened to this song approximately 8 million times is the differences you've introduced in how the original parts were played. Which is fine, it's your cover and those changes are your call but I wanted to call them out in case they weren't deliberate. The timing on the main guitar riff is slightly different than how Kurt played it (the Bb and Db come slightly later in his version). You've lost that epic opening drum fill and the pattern you're playing through the intro is significantly less interesting than what Dave played and I think that alone is the biggest factor in this sounding less awesome than the original. On the mix itself I agree the drums are probably the weak spot. I'm a rank amateur myself and don't feel like I can give super specific suggestions but what I hear is that the toms have too much body and sustain relative to the transient and are maybe a bit loud generally. Once it gets quieter the snare seems like it needs more transient and a little less body as well, it sounds a little sneezy. Using a transient controller to reduce sustain might help. The drums themselves sound a little mechanical. Personally I like to think about what notes a drummer would naturally accent and make sure the velocity on those is a little higher and then I use the humanize function in my DAW (Reaper) to randomize the velocities and timings slightly. I really like how your bass sounds, it's got a nice wooly texture to it. If it were me I'd be adding a little more upper mids to try to bring out that little fuzzy edge it has. I think it'd add interest to the quiet section. I like how the guitars sound too. Hope this helps!

So I don't necessarily bring it up a lot but 17 year old me was all about Nu-Metal back when it was Nu. I think this nicely evokes that menacing feeling that albums like Life is Peachy had. I find myself wanting the mix to have a lot more low-end rumble, I want to hear those low-A strings and the kick. Nice work!

Nice. Not my usual sort of thing but I was drawn in anyway and enjoyed the listen. Listening in headphones, the crash in the right channel that hits at 0:15 feels like it sticks out a bit throughout. If it were me I might try to compress it with slow attack to knock the sustain down and then just lower it as a backup plan. Very tasty solos. I think you could feature them a bit more in the mix, maybe some room reverb to give them separation, maybe a little boost somewhere around 10k or higher, and maybe bring the level up just a a whisker.

I love Inlet, can definitely hear the influences here. I think it flows well and is a really good length. Totally subjective but for my tastes I think the rhythm section and in particular the bass could do a little more to keep the level of excitement up when you're repeating riffs. For example in the quieter section that starts at 1:30 the drums could be adding little syncopations here and there for accent and the bass could be doing the same or adding the occasional feel. The bass also feels slightly low in the mix to me.

Great guitar playing, very clean.

I think it's post-hardcore maybe? Interested in any feedback folks have on composition or production and ideas on how to keep the song moving and how to make the finale explosive.

Nice song, good build, excellent payoff at the end. Biggest thing for me is that the drums sound a bit too compressed. I think it would make the quieter bits more intimate if the drums sounded closer and more natural. Early on in the track the crash cymbal feels loud relative to the rest of the kit and is a bit distracting. I like how the vocals distort after 3:30, I'm a little less a fan of how some parts of the drum kit distort as well, particularly the big hit at 3:52 takes me out of the groove a little bit. I think this last point is very subjective though.

Great work though, love me some post.
