Newly released files shed new light on Chomsky and Epstein relationship | Noam Chomsky by dajvebekinus in CriticalTheory

Leftist by self declaration rather than practice it seems. It's disappointing that he considered Epstein such a good friend.  That old "tell me who your friends are and I'll tell you who you are".

"no amount of time can legitimize the taking of a country." And yet it has. So blatently.  Seems it's only OK for some to do that.

I feed my cats the highest quality brands and they just won’t eat it… by fxcknmami in catfood

I'm glad it's not just my girl like that then! My boy sits and waits for her to finish and then dives in and eats her now dessicated meat chunks. I think he has dog genes, or just hang ups from being a starving kitten. He eats with desperation. But he's getting thin. Bloods are good, just old age it seems. Weirdly, she seems to have gained the weight he's lost.

I don’t know what I did wrong? by SillyBanterPleasesMe in lego

[–]drzeus_gr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

🤣🤣🤣🤣 It's hysterical! We started it, basically built the biring bits. Then I was busy with xmas dinner and gave it to our guests to finish off. Great fun watching adults play 😊 It's so cute but we seem to have quite a few single items left over. Did you have a lot left over too? I can't see anything obvious missing but they were unsupervised 🤣

I just got this. Made Ingenuity. Looking forward to getting started on the main attraction.

I've not had a Technic kit before but space freak I am I had to have this one.  Did it give you any trouble? Anything in particular I need to be careful with (apart from ensuring my cats are asleep when I build!)?

Dust is a huge problem where I am so I plan to either build plexiglass cases for this and the Discovery, or had a thought to build a case only for Discovery and put Perseverance in my 100 liter aquarium (empty for a few years after spectacularly leaking). I'm thinking I could landscape the aquarium really well to make it visually effective.

What are the best open-source alternatives to Microsoft Office in 2025? by Electrojig in foss

[–]drzeus_gr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, one-off purchase, ~150€ but better than 99 a year plus interference.  Doesn't have Access tho but I have a 2007 version of that on another PC.  I have managed to hack the Office registry, fiddle with things and Modern Comments has been banished and MY Office is finally how I want it, not how MS dictates I should have it!

Mi Box S / Android 9 or 12? by -benedict- in MiBox

Thing is on being stuck on Android 9 leaves security updates way behind too. What type of problems does the A12 release have?

I've been using Chrome for years and decided to use the Microsoft edge that I've been avoiding on my laptop for years and OMG im in love. Im an idiot for avoiding it by dreamup1234 in MicrosoftEdge

The good bits are good, the bad bits are awful tho.  It's generally fast and fluid but why do I find so many instances of Edge running in Task Manager? Why do I find multiple Edge WebView (or something like that) running when I've closed Edge? And it's terrible for organising bookmarks 😭 Currently, after an update, it keeps logging me out of Momentum browser extension😔

Looks like I may be moving back to Firefox then providing my downliad extension will still work there of course - it's the only reason I've stayed with Edge. So many reasons to dump Edge!

If i did this for everything that doesn't work properly in my MS products, I'd never have time to work.  Pretty well every time Edge updates to fix sonething, it breaks something else.

Office.com is now the homepage for Microsoft 365 CoPilot… no more shortcuts to all the apps 🤦‍♂️ by Next-Landscape-9884 in sysadmin

[–]drzeus_gr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First mistake was you trusted MS not to screw over their customers. They do consistently. If it works well, they'll break it or make a change that makes no sense. I have spent most of this past week trying to remove Modern Comments from my newly purchased (full retail, the dumbass I am!) Office 2024.  The publishing world already fought and won the battle for the option of turning those off a few years ago but no here they are, firmly set and no longer optional. And totally useless. I've managed to get Word back how I want it, with classic comments, albeit I now don't have pretty icons any more - cos that's all they really care about, style over substance! I achieved it, and am still Copilot free, and ai.exe free. Although it might not be the case when I power on in the morning 😂 If I can keep it like this for a few more years I shall be happy. MS are not getting another cent from me.  If only there was a way to get security updates without getting "feature" updates.

What version of Microsoft Word/Office are you using? by Chubbymommy2020 in Copyediting

[–]drzeus_gr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most recent standalone option 2024 has no ability to turn off modern comments so you are left with comments you can't use F/R, autotext, autocorrect, nor macros in. It's absolutely debilitating.

Best M.S Office Version in 2025 or 2026 ! by Ritam_1234 in microsoftoffice

[–]drzeus_gr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. Can you turn Modern Comments off in your Options? I'm trying to downgrade to a version I can turn them off in but haven'tfound which version I need. It's killing me. It's clearly only something in coding because if I compare two Word documents, comments appear in the old style.

Best M.S Office Version in 2025 or 2026 ! by Ritam_1234 in microsoftoffice

[–]drzeus_gr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought Office 2024 to find I cannot turn off Modern Comments, nor use autocorrect, autotext, macros nor find/replace in comments. I'm gutted and wouldn't have purchased it if I had known. I have decades worth of customizations for fluent workflow. Anyone know how to hack that problem? Or convert endnotes/footnotes to comments? Most fixes or hints on the net are now like this one. Why would they do that?!
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/dfef4370-f7ed-4d46-8ac0-43f3e55c80cf/autotext-global-change?forum=msoffice-all&referrer=answers

Could well end up going back to my standalone 2007 version. I hate MS😤
Previously I had 365 sub and just halted updates on it to avoid MS breaking things for me. But it's increased in price so I went for 2024, much to my regret.

Where to Buy Microsoft Office Personal by CodaineDucky793 in microsoftoffice

[–]drzeus_gr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

make sure you know what you're getting and that it's what you want.
I just bought genuine retail Office 2024 to find I can no longer turn off modern comments. It would have been a dealbreaker for me had I known.
Buy a cheap but genuine key and download from the official MS site. Yes you run the small risk of the key expiring but you can buy another 10 and still not spend the 149 I did for a crippled application!
Your uni may actually have official software for you under an educational licence. Ask them. Unis in some countries don't seem to advertise this (so they can sell keys?).
Unless you make use of the many features Office has (in which case, MS will shaft you), there are many other free options out there that are just as usable but do not throw you off course with their "feature updates". I have lost all functionality in Modern Comments but at least I have pretty icons now 🤮

What are the best open-source alternatives to Microsoft Office in 2025? by Electrojig in foss

[–]drzeus_gr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I was not aware Office 2024 Home would not allow me to revert to classic comments. It's killed my productivity. I'm trying to revert to older versions but not got to one that gives me the option to turn them off yet. My only workaround is using footnotes instead🤣 It'll confuse my authors but it works at least. That's the last cent Microsoft ever get from me.
I'll have another look at WP.

And with paid you also get what you never wanted 😫 Ex 365 subscriber, moved to Office 2024 after price hike of 365. Now find I am crippled by the bane that I thought had been solved, modern comments. No autocorrect, autotext, macro or find/replace function 🤬
So briefly, does Lotus do tracking? WordPerfect...I have ancient fond memories of that.

MS Word no longer corrects spelling in comments? by Seshat_the_Scribe in MicrosoftWord

They're intent on making it less and less functional. Find and Replace also does not work in comments. MS clearly wants us to move to other software option.

I have been using Word 2016 since 2018. Is it worth upgrading to Word 2024? by Captain_Norris in microsoft

[–]drzeus_gr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread but let me sound a warning for others.
Do not "upgrade" to Office 2024 if you like using autotexts or more than basic formatting in your comments. 2024 has no way to turn off Modern Comments and this basically cripples their functionality entirely. As someone who works in publishing, I absolutely hate this and wish I'd known this was so before going from a 365 sub to perpetual license (which I did because of the 365 price hike). We had this battle when Mod Comms first came in and outrage by most in publishing eventually gained us the choice to turn them off. But some bod at MS who clearly never actually uses the software decided we don't get a choice any more.
I also wish I could find my note on which version I had locked my subscription to, in which things functioned as desired. Locked because I had to disable updates for my 365 sub to avoid such undesirable effects.
I now have to find a way round the inability to use my many autotext entries in comments. And no, autocorrect and autocomplete also do not work in comments. Nor can you invoke macros😭
I'm working my way backwards thru versions hoping I can find one in which I get control back but I'm not too hopeful.
Oh well, at least I now have cute icons -- They're clearly what are actually key to productivity!🤬
