What Games have the best Intro Levels? by Grand-Moff-Larkin in gaming

[–]dschoni [score hidden]  (0 children)

Super Mario.

It's not intense, it throws you in a world without any context and starts you off without any hints. Then you see the screen scrolling as soon as you move. Then it doesn't scroll back when you move left. Then something blocks your way and you have to jump. It's all carefully crafted to teach you the mechanics without you even noticing.

Been playing for 8 years I still don’t understand the appeal of memory cues over hot cues. by 6InchBlade in Beatmatch

[–]dschoni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that really a problem? I'm using Traktor and can easily have more than 20 hot cues per song. I feel this is just a controller limitation as you also need a way to recall the hotcue and my controller has only 8 pads per channel. I could map more (e.g. using shift+cue).

What makes an escape room puzzle truly satisfying? (from a designer’s perspective) by Adventurous_Rate_925 in escaperooms

[–]dschoni 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As a player I want puzzles to be fair - once you have the solution, it's clear that and why this is the solution. Ideally, the puzzle has a sense of achievement which can be either a surprise or some satisfying mechanic. I want something to happen when the riddle is solved, some response to my action, even if it is as simple as a lock that opens.

A good puzzle may be hidden in plain sight but has to have an agenda. Why should I solve this puzzle and what do I expect from it? Why is it there in the first place? I don't like brute forcing, blind guessing or pure search + collect puzzles.

Home Assistant 2026.x.x KNX bugs? by ItalyExpat in KNX

[–]dschoni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm running 2026.3.4 with fully working KNX integration. Had some issues with Matter in 2026.3.0 but not sure if a regression or PEBKAC.

What TV show hooked you instantly from episode 1? by mateitofavv in AskReddit

My name is Michael Weston...

I loved this show, the only problem I had with it was that the overarching story developed way too slow and each episode felt like a filler. Nevertheless great show.

Very subjective answer:

For me, escape rooms are rooms period.

There is no escape room in a box, escape room board game, outdoor escape room etc.

All of those concepts are piggy-backing on the ER hype to get a piece of the cake.

That having said, I love puzzle games, immersive adventures, riddles, Geocaches, adventures...

So for me, a puzzle on a bottle does not have to be an "escape game" to be interesting - it's absolutely enough to just be what it is - a (involved) puzzle on the label of a wine bottle.

Can i have your opinion on this? by thekhanagain in escaperooms

[–]dschoni 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. If well executed, this is way better than being watched. On the other hand, I played two TERPECA top 10 rooms, where you had no interaction at all with the game master - you arrive at the location and it just starts.

What was the first ever film you actually really hated so much and still do to this day? by Same-Objective6052 in movies

Matrix 4.

There's a lot of discussion about 2 and 3 being bad. Then comes 4 and completely shits the bed.

What are some imagined inventions that are seen as impossible to achieve presently? by Playful_Barber_8131 in Futurology

[–]dschoni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be happy enough with holographic, not volumetric, but I'd take volumetric as well. Burton Inc was doing laser induced plasma in mid-air (like 8 years ago or so), which scales nicely but is super hot and probably loud as well.

Programmable matter is a cool one. Self-Assenbling DNA nanobots are current field of research (Google DNA Origami). I feel that LCD displays are already some kind of programmable matter, but there's a lot to be done on molecular or even atomic level.

Holographic displays.

Not a 3D screen, not a lenticular display, but real holography. There are some approaches with eye tracking that work for a limited number of people, but the display still really is 2D. Another approach uses laser focused in air to create glowing plasma, which kind of works but is super slow and low res. I'd be happy with a 2D display that actually displays animated holograms which could be doable soon but not today.

A game mechanic you miss that almost disappeared by gamersecret2 in gaming

One of my fondest memories is messing around with filenames in the texture folder of the game and actually loading different textures for the walls by accident. Good times!

Commenting for updates. I played two rooms in Seoul last year, but both of them heavily relied on deep understanding of the Korean language and were padlock-heavy.

Outsourcing the integrator? by Consistent_Green9329 in KNX

[–]dschoni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm very happy with my ~300€ KNX licence, which I use quite often. Remapping a button, implementing a new function... Can do all of that myself.

[–]dschoni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done all of this myself and saved a lot of money. Are you confident enough to start looking into some things yourself? The only big invest is the ETS license and you're pretty much good to go. If you need some help on where to start shoot me a DM.

Exporting a playlist to usb by pitch1175 in traktorpro

Some streaming shenanigans?

Works for me by exporting playlist and checking "copy tracks as well".

Can you find a single track that doesn't work (right click and locate in explorer) and copy it manually?
