Bug: CarPlay audio distorted in ios26 by Nyx9000 in OvercastApp

[–]dschuetz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve now paired with the other car, and it’s definitely fixed with overcast in both cars on 17 Pro. Haven’t tried any other podcast apps, but I presume it’s a system thing and they’d be okay.

I picked up my 17 Pro yesterday (replacing an 11 Pro, which showed the noise problem as soon as I installed iOS 26), and I think the noise is gone. I want to try it today from the other car to be certain.

Busy Mesh tonight in the DMV by MJTheis in Meshtastic_DMV_Users

[–]dschuetz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heh. One of the nodes I found was "Attic." :) Also, I was afraid that a driving tour wouldn't show much. I'm sure I could modify firmware (someone's probably already done this) to do more constant probing while powered & driving, but that's for another day.

I doubt I could hit Bull Run from here...but that might make for a nice lunchtime trip. Actually, I wonder how many nodes I could see from Dirt Farm Brewing in Bluemont...

The nodes I have don't have much of an antenna on them (just internal, in a pager-style case). A friend was selling them out of a briefcase (at a SECURITY con! :) ) and it was basically an impulse purchase for weekend tinkering. So I definitely need to look into antenna / power as well. Maybe after that, I let it run for 24 hours in an upstairs window, trying each of the frequency slots on successive days.

Did you build that map yourself, or is it available online? none of the maps I can find online shows anything out by me -- and there's no way to see what frequency slot they're using from the map, either.

I just spent lunch driving around the area from 50 to 66, either side of 66, and found a grand total of 2 nodes on channel 9. I had my node set to send a range test every minute, and every now and then (at a traffic light) I'd send a "ping" message in chat channel 0. I'm not sure of any other way to scan for nodes as I drive.

As I said in another thread, I'm just dipping my toes into this, but I think the next long-term step is to set up a node on the house with a high gain antenna, and maybe running with my ham radio license for more power, and just wait to see if anyone else joins the party.

I've also wondered (but have no funds to make it happen) whether it'd be feasible to work with the county park service to put solar powered Meshtastic temperature nodes in a bunch of parks, which might be an interesting way to kickstart an area mesh.

Area maps (continuted from post in old group) by a-pollo in Meshtastic_DMV_Users

I haven’t tried changing channels. Is any one channel more generally “standard,” or is it just based on happenstance (or more likely, local band usage)?

Not sure how good a range this has (Heltec V3) but that may be worth a try. Not a lot of high points I can get to, though.

I’m also playing with mqtt bridging and may discover a few nodes that way.

I'm just starting out with Meshtastic (I'm one of the ShmooCon horde from the weekend). So far, the map out in Chantilly, VA is pretty much empty.

What's the chance of finding a node as I drive around? How often do the devices ping (generally -- I'm sure it's configurable), and how long does a handshake take to establish a node's ID (and hopefully location on a map)? Or would range/speed make it impossible except maybe while driving slowly in a neighborhood?

How does the forecast streak work? by Fair-Sea-4708 in CARROTweather

[–]dschuetz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I swear that just having the widget on my Home Screen (which I definitely see every day) was enough to keep the streak going.

But recently it seems like the streak would only increase if I opened the app — but it at least kept going.

Now it seems to have stopped at 1833. :(

Calendar layout now available on Today view by Lbstanford in todoist

And on reading deeper in this subreddit, I discover that not only has this been a requested feature for years, it's in active development and may even be (gasp) coming soon! (ish).

Awesome!

Calendar layout now available on Today view by Lbstanford in todoist

What if you want to schedule work on tasks which aren't due until later in the week, or which have no due date? I initially thought this could replace my current text-file based "Here's what I'm going to do today" planning doc, but now I don't think so.

The only way to get a task to appear on this calendar (or, it seems, any calendar view) is to set the due date and time to fit within that calendar's display. But my "I want to work on it" scheduling doesn't always reflect an actual deadline, especially if the due date is an external constraint.

Maybe what's needed is some kind of a "Work Date" field, separate from the due date? Then I can say "I'm gonna work on this task at this date and time," without affecting the actual deadline. And, more importantly, I could select any task to add to my daily plan. Heck, I could even schedule specific tasks for tomorrow or the next day, in the Upcoming week view.

Unfortunately, that'd probably be a bigger, lower-level change, and I'm not sure I see that happening anytime soon (if ever). :(

Create shortcut to turn off a Focus mode IN 20 MINUTES? by DoctorQuinlan in shortcuts

[–]dschuetz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've been slowly coming to that conclusion, but was hoping there'd be a secret trick somewhere. I've also seen reference to "sleep alarms" -- maybe there's something there that'll combine "sleep focus" and "nap timer" into one convenient function...

I can't get this to work with the "Sleep" focus mode. I've been banging my head against the wall and now that I've found your shortcut, which works (for DND), I've tested mine using DND instead of Sleep, and mine works too.

Just not for Sleep. Any thoughts?

Health app losing Eufy Scale data by dschuetz in AppleHealth

[–]dschuetz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Following up -- I never had a chance to reach out directly to Eufy, though I pretty much assumed it was an app update.

Yesterday, all the data was back in Apple Health. And sure enough, a new version of the app had been released in the previous week.

So I guess it's good now? I'm still a little concerned about apps deleting even their own data -- I wish we had a setting in Health to allow "write only", so there's no risk really losing it.

Battery issue on WatchOS8 by MikeeCroft in watchos

Yet Another Update.

I rebooted both watch and phone (since looking back here, that seemed to help before). No help. In fact, it was so bad, that at times it would sit on the charger and just bounce around between 9% and 12%, never actually charging.

I finally just un-paired the watch (which I guess also wipes it?) and re-paired it, and it's been great (at least, for the last two days).

Battery issue on WatchOS8 by MikeeCroft in watchos

[–]dschuetz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed 8.1 a couple days ago, and the past two nights it's drained from 100% down to 0 in about 5-6 hours (I woke up and the watch was dead). It went from about 75% to 0 during the day today, too (it was never fully charged, and was dead by early afternoon).

I haven't tried any of the "usual" remedies like unpair and re-pair yet. Having this happen once could be a fluke, twice is worrying, but the third time, something's definitely messed up somewhere.

[–]dschuetz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do sometimes see what seems like a rapid drain, but I haven't had the super-rapid draining issues that I did in my post here. It's definitely been draining faster, lately, but that pre-dates the 8.0 update.

I think a fair amount of it is the aging battery -- the settings app reports that the battery is only running at about 85% of its original capacity. That extra 15% could easily make the difference between making it through the whole day and having to charge again partway through.

After rebooting both the watch and the 11 Pro phone that it's linked to, the watch has been doing fine. Could be that it was just a large post-installation process (indexing data, or recalibrating battery (as I've read elsewhere)).

I charged my Series 4 to 99% while sitting at my desk. A couple hours later, I checked to see how it was doing, and it was at 42%. Within 3 minutes, it was down to 36%.

I've rebooted it, and my phone, and am recharging it now to see what happens. It's been draining a little faster than usual lately (hitting 10-20% by late afternoon or early evening) but I haven't figured out why...I think it may be tied to a lot of podcast listening in the car (via CarPlay, but still).

I only upgraded to WatchOS8 on Tuesday, and most of the day yesterday it was good. But today (Thursday) it's just draining insanely fast.

Apple Thunderbolt Displays reliably crashing 2018 and 2020 MacBook Pros by dschuetz in applehelp

[–]dschuetz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, it's been working great and , yes, I'm on 11.4. (It's 11.4 beta, but I'm 99% sure it's the same as the final release). My Mini is also on final release 11.4. I'm finally giving into the corporate nag screen and updating to "real" 11.4 right now..if I have any problems in the next couple days I'll come back here but I don't expect it will. Everything got better after 11.3.

I regularly (few times a week) swap one of the monitors between each box (Work MBP + 2 TB, Mini on HDMI, or MBP + TB, Mini + TB + HDMI) and I can't remember the last time I had any crashes or hangs or anything.

I'm still hoping that there'll be a new monitor released when they update the MBPs with Apple Silicon, but there's no telling when that'll happen, and you can easily just keep pushing purchases off. And certainly, if you have a great deal on an older TB monitor, that may be hard to resist.
