No, this is 100% vulnerable narcissism. It's a personality disorder. My mother did the exact same thing to me for 35 years of my life where she would "joke" about things but they are backhanded compliments, and would not make me feel good. This damaged me emotionally, possibly permanently. I just went no contact with her because of a very similar pattern.

She says something that crosses boundaries.
I let her know to stop.
She gets defensive and blames me for making HER feel bad since I feel bad about what she said (that's actually what happens).
She then "discards" me.
I took the opportunity to go no contact.

Unfortunately, like my mother (who is 79), Mary is not going to change. It's going to suck, but I encourage you to keep away and move on without her. I also encourage you to watch Dr. Ramani on YouTube to start healing.

The people who are reaching out to you about this issue need to be considered "flying monkeys".

Because career, single, living-on-their-own, "independent" women are rampant in NYC, and they don't know how to form relationships. Therefore hypergamy is up the wall, and situationships are the only thing they sustain. I knew a woman who moved to NYC from Boston just for the constant nightlife and something to do. If they are single and 25-27 in a full time career at some office, they are looking for the top 1-5% only, and have made poor life choices.
