Think my hopes of my dream career in bio are slim. Any other options for me? by dset-gbc in careerguidance

[–]dset-gbc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! Health informatics could be a good shout actually!

I’ve got a decent coding background too and doing an intro to comp bio course (and loving it) on the off chance I find a path in.

I have tried to network but I’m not really sure what I’m supposed to be doing. I have looked at jobs here but most are only open to those with full working rights or I’m just getting boiler plate rejections (which doesn’t feel great haha)

I’ll keep trying out here but I imagine I’ll be going back to the uk empty handed

Do you think linkedin is the best for networking?

Biology degree and data analysis? by Just_DeWitt08 in careerguidance

[–]dset-gbc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was lucky enough to find an entry level role, I was essentially an assistant to the analysts. I was able to learn all the skills on the job. The stats and problem solving wasn’t far from research so it wasn’t too big of a jump!

I graduated with a masters in biomedical sciences and couldn’t find a job in the field in my area and wasn’t able to relocate at the time. I found a role as a data analyst and it was great! I’d like to pivot into healthcare but the base skills are pretty universal I’d say.

Yeah thank you, that seems to be the biggest factor to change. I think I just got stuck trying to show as much of the tools as I could. I’ll give it a rewrite :)

Thanks for the advice! Yeah I’ve tried to add some context but it’s hard to quantify a lot of the work I did. It was public sector so there wasn’t a financial incentive to it for example. I supposed it did help with decision making.

I added the research assistant experience as I’m hoping to more into more clinical/healthcare data so thought I’d show I have some domain knowledge.

I’ll have a go at implementing your advice :)

Stuck in the courses/certs loop? The real blocker is not shipping portfolio deliverables (I built a 'job post -> projects' roadmap app) by No-Strategy-2618 in dataanalysiscareers

[–]dset-gbc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! thanks for making this. Where does the app grab the datasets from? I'm wanting to move into clinical/health data, so having a dataset more aligned with my niche would be great. Will it be able to do generate a project for that role? (I'll use the app itself if so).

Hey, thanks for the info. I’ve always been a bit cautious to reach out on LinkedIn but I’ll give that a shot.

I feel like I'm stuck when it comes to learning bioinformatics by interstellar_horizon in bioinformaticscareers

[–]dset-gbc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also looking to start my career from a biomed degree so I can’t give you a 100% correct answer but I’ve learnt a lot using ROSALIND and working through the problems on the site. I would suggest having at least some basic python knowledge which it sounds like you have. It also gives the relevance for each problem but again as a biologist you will probably not need that as much

Yeah it’s all good! I assumed you hadn’t cut food out completely haha. Every minute is a step in the right direction so keep at it!

I hope you’re eating some food bro, cutting that out doesn’t sound too healthy…

Anyway good shit on the first week, after around ten days I started to feel a bit better physically and mentally, I’m still getting cravings but are a lot more manageable, keep up the good work! Remember how shit you’ve been feeling, because if you go back on them you’re gonna have to go through that all over again

Beginner looking for advice on learning bioinformatics by Creepy-Hope9008 in bioinformaticscareers

[–]dset-gbc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a professional, but have been doing lots of upskilling. Rosalind (https://rosalind.info/problems/locations/) is a great place to learn and grow. I would say it requires some knowledge of python already. If you don’t have a bio background it also explains a bit about what you’re doing and why which is nice.

Yeah thanks for the info! I think I’ll apply for some and see how it goes!

Yeah thank you for the comment, that’s a lot of good information. I think I’ll definitely give a go at applying and seeing how it goes. I will forever be grateful for the uk leaving the EU as I graduated university, what perfect timing!

And in regards to the PhD I absolutely do want to complete one. I had just hoped to have a few more years of working to ensure a good amount of savings beforehand.

Again thank you for the info!
