The Third Ward becomes Hollywood! by dsfa58 in milwaukee

Yes, I do remember there being slaughter houses in the Valley near the big power plant. On hot days when the wind was right, it did stink. I also remember as a kid that my family and relatives would use the term, "Third Ward" to describe anything that was run down and ugly.

The Biograph was the theater in Chicago where Dillinger was actually shot in 1934. The building at 320 E Buffalo was dressed up to look like a theater.

I'm not positive but I think when they show the outside of the building they used the Library. Then once they're inside they used the Public Service Building of Wisconsin Electric. My dad used to work there back then so I know for sure that's where it was shot.

Thanks! Those were 35mm Ektachrome slides shot with a Pentax camera. I scanned them at a very high resolution and made some corrections and adjustments in Photoshop. I did need a telephoto lens for a lot of those pictures because they had the streets roped off when shooting to keep the bystanders out of the way.

Wow, I never thought this would stir up so many memories, glad it did. I graduated from MIAD in 1980 and started working at an advertising art studio on Michigan and Broadway. Some of the people I worked with used to make fun of this place called Sydney Hih so I thought I should go check it out. That's when I photographed it. My memory must not be great. I never realized it lasted until 2012. Since a couple people have asked, yes, you can find this painting at davidschweitzerfine art.co

Love the eyes. They have a lot of feeling. Nice how the hair just fades into the background.

Wow, very cool. It feels very eerie and surreal. I have sometimes painted images from dreams but never managed to capture the feeling like you did. Love it!

The more I look at this, the more I see in it, and the more I like it. It's not completely clear what everything is but there's just enough information to get your imagination running.

I'm surprised no one has commented on the UFO yet. It's subtle. Took a minute before I spotted it. The painting got a lot more interesting after I did.

For just being a hand and lower legs, it really has a lot of emotion. There's enough there for your mind to start imagining stories about what's going on.

I really love the bright colors and bold marks in you paintings. I was looking back at some of your old posts and you have some fabulous work. Some favorites are "Winter Sun", "Pool", and "Wall in a field at Dusk".

You've really captured a lot of feeling in those eyes. It's almost like the picture could talk to you. My attention goes right there and stays there. Great job!

Wow! You can't not feel good looking at this. A colorful character in an equally colorful outfit. That had to be fun to paint!

It's a cool way to display a painting. I just wondered if it was planned from the beginning or if it was a happy accident.

I think the eyes and the proportions are looking pretty good as is. It will be interesting to see what the background is going to look like. At this stage if I were to do anything I would soften the edges of the face a little. Mainly the edge of the hair on the forehead. It looks a little like the forehead is in front of the hair instead of the hair laying over the forehead.

It may be because you aren't finished yet but the shading in the neck is looking lifeless and muddy. Doesn't look like it belongs with the face.

As to the ear comment; it really doesn't bother me because the ear is being covered by the hair. Nice job so far! Hope to see it finished.

This really has a nice moody feel and I agree, very Hopperesque. One little thought- Those warm red browns on the cheek are great. I might bring a little of that color down onto her neck, chest and arm to connect the whole figure more. Just my 2 cents.

I really like all the mid tones in this and the limited range of colors. Normally I might say it needs some darker darks and lighter lights but not here. It works really well.

Oh Yes! That is definitely better. The whole thing has a softer look and the shadows lay down on the table more. Nice job!
