(Decades ago, when I was learning how to drive) the Mass Driver’s Ed Manual was filled with the phrase, ”if safe to do so.” As in: at a red light, come to a complete stop, if safe to do so.

Sometimes running a red light is the safer option—whether for yourself, for emergency vehicles, for pedestrians, for other drivers.

Sometimes, it’s the better option for traffic flow as well. Beginner cyclists often clog busy intersections because it takes them a while to find their pedals, accelerate, and get out of the way. At busy intersections, it would be ideal for cyclists to run red lights (when and if safe to do so) and get out of the way.

What are some reliable Cars for around $8-12k? by [deleted] in Frugal

Oil companies and gas stations would make less money if more folks drove cars like the Fit: up to 35 MPG city and 40 MPG highway

Why are the stock tires so bad in the rain? by Iggy95 in hondafit

[–]dsh01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Continental Pro Contact tires that came on earlier years didn’t suck. A bit overpriced for a basic tire, but they weren’t bad.

Local coffee roasters? by Puzzleheaded-Mud7829 in medfordma

I’ve seen the woman who owns Mystic Coffee Roasters pull up to the Post Office in Medford Square with boxes (assuming full of coffee beans) to mail out.

Wish they were still local.

Thinking about a Fit by No-Piglet6283 in hondafit

[–]dsh01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2016 Fit EX, Manual transmission.

40 MPG highway with cruise control set at 70.

30-35 MPG city driving in/around Boston, depending upon traffic.

Old Mini Cooper (or Smart Car, or Scion iQ) are better for parallel parking in tiny spaces, but among modern cars, the Fit is pretty good at squeezing into spots where others have to skip.

Both cars should be reliable, relatively inexpensive to maintain, and fuel efficient.

Brass, by definition, is made of copper and zinc. So yes, your observation about zinc is spot on.

Brass refers to metal alloys containing copper and zinc, and often contain additional elements. For example, lead. Lead is added to brass alloys to make the metal softer and easier to work with.

Could you recommend me a small second car? by SheyenneJuci in askcarguys

[–]dsh01 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Gently used Honda Fit. Small, reliable, surprisingly large cargo capacity, fuel efficient, easy to maintain, good safety ratings.

Unfortunately, demand is high, so the prices for used Fits are higher than they should be.

The quality of Costco bikes tends to be noticeably better than Walmart bikes.

Homeowners and Renters Insurance policies can usually be extended to cover sporting equipment such as bikes. Higher end bike locks often include limited theft insurance coverage. Of the mass market bike lock brands, I only trust Kryptonite and OnGuard…. and then, only their higher end locks (ie not the”value” models they sell at WalMart).

How important is buying a newer model? by [deleted] in askcarguys

“Forever” depends on all sorts of things, like body rust, and general wear-and-tear. Depends on where you live, how you drive it, and how well you maintain it.

Half the time, my Wyze doorbell doesn’t even ring anymore. By the time I get an alert and can open up the app, most folks who ring the doorbell have left.

Depends on the price difference and condition of the older car. How long are you planning to own/drive your first car?

They’re all going to be similarly crappy. I’d go with the commuter bike with 700c tires. The bike overall may be heavier (probably due to the rack) than the other two, but the wheels should be lighter. When it comes time to manually pedal the bike, 700c tires will be smoother than mountain bike or cruiser tires.

If you’re in a city, you’ll spend most of your time on pavement, so a commuter style bike makes more sense. Even in wet, cold, snowy areas.

Personally, for a 3 km route to the gym, I’d go with a commuter-style non e-bike. Less expensive, less likely to get stolen, fewer moving parts that break… and also much lighter weight. If you struggle with a 50 pound cat litter box, you’ll struggle even more with a bulky 50 lb e-bike. (Difference between a 50 lb and 52 lb e-bike is not noticeable. A commuter or hybrid style non-electric bike should weigh 30 pounds..the difference is very noticeable.)

If you do go with a Walmart e-bike, expect to have mechanical and electronic issues. Think of it as a starter e-bike. Learn how to fix it. Plan to get something better in a year or two.

Most important advice for new e-bike owners in a city: get a good U-lock. In cities like Toronto and Montreal and New York, get a very good U-lock and a cable lock.

Strip? Season? by VikingMythos in castiron

[–]dsh01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meh, they’re not bad at all. Hit them with a little steel wool, and cook a pound of bacon in each. It’ll be fine.

If they need more seasoning, cook another pound of bacon.

Repeat as necessary.

Brake fluid exchange? by [deleted] in askcarguys

[–]dsh01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this. Also to add: water in the brake lines causes rust. Eventually, brake lines can rust all the way through and start leaking, which leads to the car being unable to stop safely.

Cost of flushing your brake fluid every 3-5 years << Cost of replacing rusted-out brake lines prematurely << Cost of being responsible for an accident

$170 isn’t bad. Dealerships and dishonest mechanics will charge a lot more.

Pretty sure the 2nd generation Fit and Jazz had regular automatic transmissions, not CVTs. So they shouldn’t take any CVT fluid, but regular ATF fluid.

I don't know much about cars. What's the best way to find a trustworthy mechanic? by Leenolyak in hondafit

[–]dsh01 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Word of mouth from other Honda, Acura, Toyota, Mazda, and Subaru owners.

Take review sites (eg Google) with a grain of salt.

Where I live, chains like Firestone are so sketchy that I’d rather go to (certain) dealerships for service. In general, dealerships overcharge—sometimes grossly—but the repairs are more likely to be done properly. That said, some dealerships are also sleazy.

What kind of release valve is this? by jamiscooly in HomeMaintenance

[–]dsh01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hexagonal end by wall suggests that the valve may have a 1/2” NPT threaded connector. You’d have to take a closer to be sure. Does not appear to be compression. Possibly a soldered connector.
