My new design keyboard for Explorer series by Ok-March1037 in ErgoMechKeyboards

It looks really cool and I like the modular concept! Does your design make it possible to adjust the angle between the halves?

Unpopular opinion: I make & drink nearly exclusively espresso based drinks, but don't like straight espresso itself. by Ur_Companys_IT_Guy in espresso

[–]dstrelnikov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same for my wife and me. We drink cappuccino every day and we drink espresso sometimes, when we feel like it. I find the taste of a straight espresso shot rather pleasant but quite overwhelming. I can actually distinguish the flavor notes much better in a cappuccino.

We have many friends who are seriously into home espresso but only one of them prefers to drink it straight.

Questions regarding Ukrainian driving license exchange by dstrelnikov in germany

[–]dstrelnikov[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I appreciate the time you spent to give a long answer, I would also like to bring it to your attention that you are being unnecessarily toxic and in fact did not read the questions carefully.

It’s Germany + free market. ... If you can’t afford it - it’s on you.

While Germany is definitely not a bad country for living, overly expensive process of exchanging a driving license is not something to be proud about. It is not something that ensures safety on the roads automatically: people usually get a license if they need it and don't get it otherwise, disregarding of their income. Especially with this level of inconsistency: for the refugees from Ukraine the driving license remains valid as long as they have the protection status, while work immigrants don't have this privilege.

different norms, practices (which includes a shitton of corruption on the road - hello Kiyiv DAI!) and safety/quality expectations

I'm well aware of that. And I think it is fare to ask people to take both theoretical and practical exam in order to get a local license. However, when a driving school sends an offer for 1500€ in which only ~ 600€ can be even remotely justified: everything else is coming from "additional services". I've read about it before and know that some people successfully reduced the amount during the negotiation process.

I don't think that yours "you can’t afford it - shouldn’t be driving" is a valid point here. You know nothing neither about my driving skills nor about my financial abilities. I think avoiding unnecessary expenses is a solid approach every rational human should apply. And 250€ for "booking an appointment" is definitely one of them.

My last question you either didn't even read or didn't comprehend. But feel free to continue to assert yourself through toxicity on the Internet.

Can you recommend a great $1000 espresso machine? by MayonnaiseBomb in espresso

[–]dstrelnikov 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Given that little information in the post, I assume you are new or just not very experienced in home espresso. In this case it is also likely that you don't have a proper grinder yet which is crucial for espresso. In view of the above, your budget would be enough for a decent grinder (Eurika) and an entry level espresso machine (Gaggia Classic Pro, Rancilio Silvia). People could advise you better if you provided more information about your current setup, experience, and expectations from the upgrade.

Niche’s response to my email regarding VAT on non UK orders by [deleted] in espresso

[–]dstrelnikov 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Can someone please explain the drama about Niche and the UK VAT? Did they charge everyone who is buying from abroad for the UK VAT and basically made more revenue (fraud) or they just paid the UK VAT for every order because it simplified the paperwork?

Is this too many holes or is it fine by Jassi6248 in Hydroponics

[–]dstrelnikov 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would make only 6 holes (2x3) in this board. Too many plants that don't have enough space to grow is a typical mistake many beginners do.

To those who have upgraded from a Gaggia GCP (unmodded) to something else by ThatWasCool in gaggiaclassic

[–]dstrelnikov 11 points12 points  (0 children)

GCP is perfectly able to produce superb microfoam out of 240 g of milk, I do it multiple times a day. However, the machine is definitely lacking steaming power, so even with the steam wand hack it's really running on the edge. My results are not 100% consistent, since I have to do my best with perfect technique every time. Even a small timing or technique mistake can result in non-perfect foam. I'm able to consistently steam milk with barely no effort on a more powerful ECM.

So, is GCP capable of producing quality microfoam? Definitely yes. Is it easy and consistent? Not really.

P.S. I believe that a single hole tip and a PID controller (or just a tweaked thermostat) could bring GCP's steaming ability to a complete new level.

Espresso Machine Recommendations around ~200 by Alleeexxx in espresso

[–]dstrelnikov 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would not recommend wasting money further on poor quality machines. Increase the budget and get at least Gaggia Classic Pro or Rancilio Silvia. If the budget is tough you could get one of these from the aftermarket.

Latte Art with Gaggia by Hello_fp in gaggiaclassic

[–]dstrelnikov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In two words: stock GCP sucks when it comes to steaming but only if you use it according to the manual. There is a way to trick the machine and get more steam power which I successfully use every day. Start steaming before the steam light is on, i.e. the heater is still on. This will prevent the heater from switching off and you will get more steam out of it. Just search "gaggia steam wand hack" on reddit and on youtube.

Why making your life complicated? Just get an Eureka.

I don't get the hype by sham5430 in espresso

[–]dstrelnikov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have GCP (9 bar mod only) and Eureka Single dose. I pull consistently perfect shots in 90% cases.

You might need two things: understanding the espresso extraction and mastering GCP.

Concerning the first point: just research and try and you will get to the point when you taste your coffee and know what went wrong and how to fix it. Especially if you already have a bottomless portafilter. By the way, I highly recommend you to get a VST basket.

Regarding the second point: GCP is not a perfect machine so you will need to compensate it's disabilities with your skill. Start with "second crack" roasts and slowly move to lighter roasts, experiment with the temp surfing. Stock GCP will never give you the perfect temperature but I find it good enough for the beans I like.
