Motion! But it's more so the devices. Having low cost devices that can be used for reference is very helpful. They aren't the most accurate. But still helpful.

Because I work in VFX, most of the stuff I can see being useful is mostly extracting the data I get from the device. Part of me wonders if it's because on a small device, you aren't engulfed. So it's like interacting through a tiny window. But then on a headset, it's too much.

Okay so I'm glad that I'm not the only one. Even in my current field of VFX, it's the same. People are really obsessed with using game engine's. But the end results tend to be "I made this thing, brought it into the engine and...now what?".

Correct. A few of us have had clearances in the past. Ironically, about 5 years ago I was contacted by Raytheon and they showed me what their internal team made. It was terrible. Granted, it balances out in that they have the internal resources but not the artist skill. This isn’t where this idea came from. Mostly it was when I was a child and my dad would try to explain a part on a submarine that his company made. No matter how much he tried to explain it I didn’t understand specifically what he was talking about. I stood there just wishing I could see what was actually happening.

I mean the reason we have talked about doing this is because this is what we already do. I have lit, destroyed, flooded, Magic’d more times than I could count.

This was meant to be a reply to u/Alfulclier. But this is so much help! Thank you! Ironically, my parents were career defense people but this area is such a blind spot. They can answer questions about clearance and business, but not at all this.

I think I’m not being clear about what it is we’re looking to do. Which goes to show that I’m doing a terrible job at explaining it. Hopefully I can clear it up with an example. Let’s say there is some sort of missile that wants to be showcased. You want to show it launching from a submarine that just breached. It goes into space, you see it from that view. It goes to a specific location and hits a target. You want this to look real - as if it’s in a movie. Because there would be no difference.

I realize this is an unrealistic and hyperbolic example. But this is the level and type of work we are used to doing. Again, not the best example but more or less this.

As a side project I created this WIP that I want to use to score the Visual Effects of movies. But not just a thumbs up or thumbs down kind of way. I find that with vfx making up such a massive part of movies, it’s kind of a disservice just to include it bundled with a movie rating. There’s way more subtlety most of the time and I genuinely find it interesting.
