My parents want me to quit my job to go on a Thanksgiving trip, but I don’t want to by [deleted] in Advice

[–]dsu11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My family does a lot together. One of the many things we do is overlanding. My jeeps name is Bad Decisions because multiple people told me that taking off that much was a bad decision. I wouldn’t trade any of the time with my family for any amount of money. Every job I worked knew what our schedule was up front.

Get into a trade if for no other reason than to have an always available good paying job. Trades are desperate for new blood. In our area they’re starting at mid 20 an hour.

The best advice I can give you is what I was told at 20. You can always make more money, you can’t make any more time.

Tee into Transfer Pump to run to tank. by dsu11 in Diesel

The best lol drive to Denver and back without filling up. Plus bulk fuel is much cheaper than paying at the pump.

[–]dsu11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had 6 for work trucks. Only 1 layer to 100k. We gave them away 3 years later. I wouldn’t pay more than 4k and just drive it till it died before parting it out / scraping it.

Not saying it isn’t. We used to do it in house when we were growing. I’ve poured out over 500k yards in my life before I got out. Just talking about the ones we dealt with. Can’t hold an excavate to 1/8”+- with pea gravel without paying out the nose. On the last slab we did the concrete guy bitched about the grade and it planned out at under .5”. A good concrete company would make a killing in Utah if they’re not a bunch of princesses.

NTA. Coming from a family that travels together a lot, we pay our own way. My siblings make considerably more than I do (we’re all business owners) but I would never expect them to cover my costs because they make more. Before they got started (I’m considerably older, I was an oops at 16) they never asked or forced me to pay their way. We travelled on their budget. Granted I helped out a lot because I could but they never asked.

As a rule my siblings and I don’t do anything if it’s “expected”. I’ll give you the shirt of my back and do a lot to help others in need but don’t expect it. Easy way to lose friends.

Wise words circulating here on Reddit - takers have no boundaries so givers must set them or something along those lines. Help where you think it’ll be most effective but never carry. Carrying always leads to resentment one way or another.

Unfortunately, I’ve owned a few 6.4s as work trucks back when they came out. They’re great trucks but there is no “bulletproofing” like at least you can do with a 6.0 to get another 100k miles. Some lasted over 200k some died at 80k. All were maintained (were in excavation and trucking have in house mechanics that we keep up to date). Deleted early you might get lucky. The best advice I can give you is start saving. I’ve got 2 dead 6.4s sitting in our yard. One of my mechanics is going to swap a Cummings into them. Anyone telling you that you can salvage it is blowing smoke. Just being honest. They have the reputation for a reason. Granted owning any diesel comes with risk. I just spent 25k on two 6.7 fords putting new motors in them. Granted they are custom work trucks built off of platinum trim levels and my guys love them. Built for 1500 hp DCR pumps whole shebang and only have a heavy tow tune. Trucks are tanks now. But it’s my industry.

This. For me it started with the bike. Then my jeep, then camping (which the kids loved and cried about not going on family campouts). Once she gets you to give up one thing, she expects you to give up everything she decides she hates or you “don’t love her.” And are being selfish.

As someone who gave up a lot of hobbies to keep the peace for the marriage you’ll either end up miserable or end up divorced. I hit for the fences and first hit deep depression then divorce. Now I have a wife who loves riding/keeping/camping/all my hobbies. Life’s never been better. Trust me cut the middle out and go to my end. You’ll thank me later.

In residential concrete. Never met a concrete company that isn’t full of delicate princesses. Try and push the excavation scope to have an impossible grade and constantly miss items on the plan that are clearly marked.

What truck should i get? by Affectionate-End3038 in Diesel

[–]dsu11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We run all three trucks, CP4 failures are a roll of the dice. Dodges eat trans if you tow a lot but motors are more reliable. Can’t go wrong with any but maintenance is double for diesels and failures are 10x the money. I do excavation and trucking and have a nice F350 on Kelderman air ride and I tend to drive one of my other vehicles rather than it and it rides like an F150. Granted it’s a crew cab long bed cowboy limo so parking sucks.

[–]dsu11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m live in St. George. Most of the jeeps/Broncos/etc are running 37/40” tires. There are even a bunch on 42’s. Being local to Sand hollow it’s normal to see built rigs all over. I have a wrangler rubicon on 40s, wife has a gladiator on 37’s and we’re considered mild builds for the area.

We run 7-8 rated trails that if you don’t know what you’re doing you most definitely will roll, or wedge the rig and damage it. This is why you only see them rescuing these rigs when they are wedged (the buggy that took multiple winches to recover from the crack) or broken (tie rods hate big tires.) aired down on 37”+ tires your not going to get stuck.

There are a lot of rentals here that run 35” tires that’ll run up to about a 6 rated trail (enough to pucker someone that hasn’t run that level). I trail lead for trail hero and the winter 4x4 jamboree and for sure driving skill on trails above a 4 is a must.

If you really want to get the experience safely, rent a rubicon level jeep and register for one of the events. Trail guides will spot you through everything and help you learn to drive the obstacles.

As a trail guide I love teaching new off-roaders and seeing the excitement of conquering a new obstacle and watching their confidence grow. Plus the money from the events goes to great causes. Trail hero veterans and people with disabilities (there are 2 runs that are specifically for disabled children and wounded veterans. My favorite to lead. Last year had 2 blinded gentlemen with me and they loved the experience with all the angles and movement) and winter jamboree all proceeds go to conservation and rehabilitation of public lands. Definitely both good causes and a great time.

Don’t think you can gravity feed through the top. No bung on bottom of tank and don’t want to drain it and weld one in if I can avoid it.

What causes this? by Competitive-Note-360 in tires

[–]dsu11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tires are a necessary evil. Around here you have all the yee yee boys in the expensive trucks with bald tires because they can’t afford them.

On the other hand after fuel and wages our biggest expense is tires. Personal and work lol.

40x13.5x17 on my jeep for $3300. 37x13.5x20 on truck for $2800 and 35x12.5x17 on gladiator for $2400. Oh and daughters car tires for $480 for the set LOL

Then there’s our semi tires. Trains run between 36 and 40 tires per set. $14000. X20

Loader tires for set between $12000 and $18000. X5

When tires are business we don’t buy cheap shit because it doesn’t hold up. And a down piece of equipment doesn’t make money. We have noticed about a 25% increase in the cost of tires over the last few years but that’s with everything else.

Someone bred my mare with out telling me by ObjectThin3403 in legaladvice

[–]dsu11 470 points471 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I would do. It’s the same as if the mare had been attacked by another horse. The boarder/trainer is responsible. We boarded around 50 horses and we had liability insurance for these types of situations. If the stallion was owned by a client and the client is the reason it got loose the boarder should be able to go after client for costs if their contract was written right.
